ird output flange

Hi everyone i have just bought a freelander 1, but the propshaft had been removed but left in boot. but the output flange has been removed and fitted with a blanking plate does anyone know where i can get just the flange as the ird seems fine.

How do you know the IRD seems fine if it has no pinion and the prop is in the boot??
Why was the prop removed?
@GrumpyGel has a blanking plate on his (from memory) but it is for a very good reason.

The IRD output pinion has most likely been removed because the crown wheel is damaged. This causes meshing issues with the pinion teeth, so they get removed. I expect you'd need a replacement IRD and a VCU as that stiffening will have caused the IRD problem to start with. If you decide to go ahead with reinstating the 4X4, then you'll also need 4 identical tyres.

ird seems fine as all teeth are in one piece with no marking on teeth also oil was clean no filings when i removed blanking plate and drained oil tyres are not an issue has 4 the same not sure about vcu but does anyone know where u can just get a flange to try its just going to be used around farm anyway so not to bothered if it even was in constant 4x4

EBay is the cheapest place to get a used output flange.

ye searched high and low on ebay can only find complete ird might have to go down that route thank you for all your help though

I'm running all the original kit.... less the crown gear

I think it highly unlikely the IRD on this car can be reused for 4WD. Props might be removed to try and improve mpg or to stop support bearing noise - but you wouldn't remove the rear pinion. The rear pinion is only removed because there are problems with the IRD. The likelyhood of it just being the bearings in the pinion or its crown gear is remote - ie its more than likely that the pinion gear is damaged also and probably the bearings supporting it. You may even find the rear diff is only functioning because there is little stress going through it.

The oil is clear because it has been changed when the blanking plate was fitted.

However, if the OP wants to try putting a pinion and props back on that is his choice and it will be interesting to find out what happens.

Even if the IRD does function, if the VCU is faulty and the vehicle used "constant 4x4" - it won't last long! The car won't always be used on mud so the windup will kill it quickly.
