hi every one
Got a issue with the freelander that's not good was driving down road when gear stick started shaking and the car around 40/50 so turned around at round about to limp the lady home and as u was cornering there was knocking. There was no bangs or grinds gears select find. Is this the ird bearing that just chucked it's guts or something more serious

when did yu last check the vcu?
have yu got the same tyres all round. new ones on back?

possible ird, vcu and/or rear diff. could be a £2000 bill.

When my IRD was on the way out, the symptoms were similar to the sound of a wheel bearing issue, but constantly, not just when turning steering. It was like a droan that got progressively louder the faster I went.
LR specialist in Bourmouth diagnosed it as the IRD and once replaced, all was good again.

It felt like the prop shaft was wobbly at the front end which is making me think it's the ird bearing or is there something on the prop that can go ?? But just normal noise of gearbox noise that 4x4 seem to have. Gears. Select smooth tho so any other suggestions on what it may be ?

when you are going round a tight bend and you get knocking it could be your drive shaft joint if you go round a left hand bend and you get the knock it will be your right joint and vice versa.

With in the 2 min can't remember exactly. Every landy I've ever been in has had that 4x4 sound when you have drive shaft the whine. The Landy specialist has got it now thinks it could be bearing some where there stripping down and looking at it. If it's the ird they said can just take it out and blank it till get money sorted

2 minutes is well into the danger zone. I consider 1 minute to long. I think I'm on the limit at 45 seconds. You are risking IRD/ failure, if not done so already.

Only went of the guild I found online different weights different times. If the ird is gone the will just have it taken off till funds allow me to replace it as LR specialists said they do a blanking kit for it all so can run 2wd

2 mins - depends whats on the end of the bar - if its 5KG the VCU's shagged, if its 1KG, its probably OK.

As its now with a "Landy Specialist" - chances are you won't find out what's wrong for a while. Good chance they'll "investigate", blame the IRD, remove the props and mask what ever is the problem - ker-ching a few hundred £ bill. When the problem comes back under less 2WD stress, you'll find out what it is.

Don't know why an IRD fault without any noise would make the gearstick shake. It could be the IRD/VCU, but I'd check your engine mounts.

I made the assumption that he used our one wheel up test. Not some random Internet drivel. At 2 minutes on the 5 kg at 1.2 Meter test, the IRD is under tremendous strain. As you know yourself, it will let go.
I'm thinking that the engine is shaking as broken teeth try to mesh, momentarily jamming up.

There was no noise which has confused me. Smooth gear changed no clunking on or off Accelerator just the wobbling gear stick and slight knocking when I corner. Limped it back home. Get the dredged phone call tomorrow to say what is wrong. For what i paid for the old girl I'm still quids in if its a largeish bill. Could it be a joint on drive shaft gone???

Some of the threads about VCU testing link to Hippo's video where he does timings with different weights - so people may compare to something other than the 'defacto' 5KG.

If there's gears not meshing properly in the IRD - its going to be very noisy!

To add to possibilities, check exhaust isn't loose and knocking the gear linkage, maybe a misfire rocking the engine or add to the possibilities of IRD/VCU or engine mounts.

If you decided to turn round just because the gearstick was shaking - it must have been shaking an awful lot!
