I wouldn't know why you'd want to keep it standard though unless you're not bothered about the sounds being made by a head unit that's the same as one from a 1990 Rover!!??

Did you ever have the Harmon Kardon setup in your DSE?? Its a good quality sound system and with a head unit that is in full working order (get it reconditioned if it isnt) then the sound quality is excellent.

I have the Harmon Kardon system in it at the moment, don't get me wrong it was probably great when it was installed in the car from new.

But it's a 10+ year old system, technology has come on a alot since then and it's not as special as people make out! The speakers are ok but even a set of cheap, modern components will out perform them.

Plus if people can stomach the extra cost, ANY head unit, even a £49 headunit from Halfrauds [any Chinese make that you've probably never heard of and sounds like a sneeze LOL] will have components in it that will produce a better sound stage and process DIGITAL information [not the type from a tape converter lol] with better results than the head units in P38s as standard.

I'm not saying the harmon Kardon stuff is crap, it's quite good considering the age BUT get yourself down to a local I.C.E dealer [not Halfrauds] and have a listen to one of their demo cars... then prepare to want to give your credit card a bashing :D

I've got the HK system and its fantastic.

Compared to what though? Compared to the standard system, yes it is good; compared to systems in other 10+ year old cars, yes it is good; But compared to say, the Bose systems in the late audis or even a decent set of components bought from halfrauds and mounted in ANY car properly with a decent amplifier and x-over set-up, the HK system is antiquated, with over complicated wiring and just a pain in the bum!

My ears are cleaned and youthful thankyou LOL

I'm not coming at this with rose tinted glasses, the HK set up is great if you're not that bothered about sounds.

But if you have an iPod and want decent sound reproduction... which I saw as the point of this thread.... well you wouldn't buy a Blue ray player and expect it to look as good through a 10 year old CRT tv would you?

i agree with paddy

the HK was good, and is still okay - but thats all

better components around now, a £100 4x50w headunit with newer speakers will be better, cheaper, and easier to install
