Seams to me that the shaft had been loose for some time before you spotted it and has worn the holes in the casing. As James says do not over tighten as this will soon destroy bearings. If you can eliminate as much movement as possible without binding up the gear bearings and keep the oil topped up it may well get you home. Good luck.

So then I’m looking at an overhaul of the transfer case all together? Buying a new box like James said?

Looks like it may be going that way [repairing your case may or may not be an option ] but plenty about in the UK and you may want to have a disco one with higher gearing.
Got the feeling you were trying to keep going untill you got it home.

I have actually been driving on it for some time. So I think it might be time to get a re furnished one. Thank you for the help.

Anywhere you would suggest getting one from?

Ashcroft.
Real quick update. Finally got the nut off of the shaft. What happen was that when I thought I was tightening it I wasn’t. The shaft was twisting with the nut. I had to hammer and chisel it off to turn it without turning the shaft. Any advice on how to put the next one on without the shaft turning with the nut? I ordered a new nut. A picture is available of the thread point and nut.

shaft has a flat and so doe the plate secured by the 8mm bolt but 10mm socket size in your pic, if it rotates plate must be damaged frc7452
