Interior lights problem - disco 2

Hi everyone,can anyone throw any light ( pardon the pun )on why both front and rear interior lights will only switch on and off,will not work when opening doors,i could work it out if it was only one door but all five has left me mystified,thanks guy's,Dave.

Hi, unfortunately for you(and all of us, D2 owners) the interior lights(among many others) are controlled by BCU......never happened to me(lucky me) to have some experience but i checked the diagrams and according to them a wiring/contact issue couldnt lead to these symptoms(but u'll never know with a Landy)

...Do they work when u unlock/lock with the fob?.......coz they must.........and i suppose the swithes are perfeclty standing on the middle position dont they

to see how complicated could be this issue(if it's not just a simple "absence-of-mind" kind a thing see this:

Interior courtesy lamps
The BCU controls the operation of the interior courtesy lamps. The courtesy lamps are situated in the front, mid and rear areas of the headlining.

No,lights dont operate when locking/unlocking the car and yes the on/off/door switches are in the middle........bloody annoying !!!!

Then if u have RAVE go to Electrical library>Description and operation>Interior lamps>Interior lamps automatic operation read it and when your brain is starting to burn grab some beers and get drunk(just joking)...u can see how many connectors, headers, wires,etc(including the f**ckin BCU) are involved) ...if u are not very familiar with electric/electronic diagrams and related procedures and tools i can't help u more...sorry....otherwise if u are u dont need my help....... but if it's a management issue scanning the BCU could help u find the problem.

It seems so. It better be a BCU programming issue which can be done with a tester...........i've spent 9 hours once to find a lost digital BCU input generated by a dry joint..............GOOD LUCK

A thing quite easy to do is to check the connectors/wires related with the automatic operation of lamps(maybe it's a bad contact), these are C0294, C0670, C0723, at least the ones more exposed to some ingress/shocks/damage/etc...if no joy then u have to get to the BCU's connector C0663(u find the positions in RAVE>electrical library>connector wiews) move the wires/push the connector and see what happens then(dont unplug the connector from BCU just shake it a bit.....pin 9 of this connector is the output for courtesy lamps)....if after that they begin to work then unplug the battery neg. lead, pull out the connector from BCU and clean contacts, concentrate on pin9 and it's wire)...connect it back and after that u can reconnect the battery.

It's not a mole-hill i know.........nevertheless u might be lucky to be something more simple.

Thank's again for the input,am i right in thinking the bcu is located in the passenger footwell ? if i have no luck in sorting the bcu out,can i just install a second hand unit or do they need programming?

They need programing to your vehicle "spec" as all vehicles have diff options "selected" AND the BCU stores the mileage of the vehicle, as well as the Instrument pack. The 2 must be "synched" so the odometer does not flash and I believe you can ONLY advance the mileage NOT decrease it, so if you buy a second hand one make sure it comes from a vehicle that has LESS mileage than yours does.
