Is it even possible???

I have an old Disco (1995) 300tdi and stepson is hopefully going to pass his test next month so thought I'd give him Disco as first car but having rung all the obvious insurance companies it seems they won't consider him.

Has anyone managed to insure new driver or will I have more chance with a Series??? God forbid we have to resort to getting a "proper" car for him!!!

Be interested to know, my son is 18 & quotes are horrendous for most basic tin box. I wondered if a 90 / series might be better, or maybe not until he's 21 & can get benefit of classic insurance?

Go to the adrain flux thread and send ED a pm with details, post code and address so he can get you a quote. Good luck

To add my 19 year old son to my rangey pushes it from £285.00 to erm £12800.00

So no he is not on it lol

For him to insure his sj410 best quote £1200.00

The EU made big changes in insurance rules took effect 1 jan 13

When I was 18 I was £1500 as a named driver, I'm now 21 with my own policy and it was £600 when I renewed.

Can't help with the insurance on a series yet but am looking tonight as I impulsed purchased one at the weekend.

for my lad, 17 we bought a MG ZR headgasket fooked, repaired it all ok, insured it in his name, with me on named to sit next to him, £1000, passed his test and then it jumped to £4900.00, so MG went, had to find a car that was cheap to insure before buying the physical car, skoda 1.4 £2600 in his name. it was dearer with me on his insurance with more than 15yrs and full no claims,
£900 for car
£2600 insurance
£3500 total for a y reg skoda annually!!!!
makes disco's cheap £225 fully comp in my name

he his looking forward to 1st 12months then his insurance halves, july!!

 how much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes well that's what I thought, I would really love to know how they arrive at that figure, as I don't think postcode comes into it.. More telephone no..
They say its to do with the amount of damage to third party. But that is extreme.. You drive slower in a big old car than a small new car so both would do similar damage..

It's just banks ripping us off again. !!

You could be right,

But when you spend a lot of time money and effort getting your car how you want it you tend to look after it a bit more and drive more carefully.

Well that's my thought anyway

Maybe, but in my experience, that being me between the ages of 17 and 24, and of course what I see on the roads today, it's apparent that no matter how much the average yoof spends on his car, he still drives it everywhere flat out.

You also have to remember older 4x4s don't have crumple zones, and even a low speed crash can obliterate a small car.

My eldest lad has just joined the Army. He's 17 today, and he's saving up for a Td5 90 when he passes his test (which the Army will very kindly pay him to do!) He will be looking for insurance later on this year/beginning of next year, so any pointers would be useful. Ta

Post code and address and type of car all plays a part in what you pay.
On one of the flux threads I put up the post code rating system. as in they are classed as low to very high on the rate scale. Rule changed first of the year, with women getting upto a 50% increase and under 25-26 yr olds getting a healthy hike in rates.

Our postcode gives us band C
Where my son lives is band A

But it's cheaper for my lad to insure his car at our address.. So it doesn't add up..

Morning all!

I always found insurance on my 2.5td 90 when I was 17 cheap as chips! £500 fully comp (granted not cheap chips)! That was 10 years ago mind you. - rural Norfolk if you are inclined to think that makes a difference- I do.

Most of the younger lads round here with 90s/disco's don't pay much more than 800ish. But they've had to shop around for it.

I went through a broker and got the best deal. The right broker will know the right company for your circumstances IMHO. 😃

All the best. Tom.
