just picked up new disco today, haven't really had a good look over it yet, as we were enjoying the lovely summer rain through the whole task,
on our way home it went dark, even bigger cloud than normal, also a bit of heavier rain than normal, M6 getting a good hose down,
put the side lights on, the right hand side of the instrument panel, which is half the speedometer and fuel tank gauge side was not working, is it an easy fix to replace the bulbs? out of the other 3 TD5's i have had, never had to do this,(lol)
will hopefully be able to get a good look in my own time and environment tomorrow if it stops f-----g raining!!!:mad:
 
you have attached how you get near the instrument pack and then u'll see the bulbs

We must have been on the same stretch of the M6 then yesterday! Was it you I waived at maybe? We were on our way back from Manchester to Essex, when it also went VERY black and we discovered that our the front sunroof on our new, (2 weeks with us) Disco II leaked! That was tropical monsoon, not rain!
So today apart from checking if I did manage to repair the oil leak from where the oil cooler joins the block, I shall be trying to identify the location of the leak on the sunroof.

In relation to instrument bulbs, neither the M or the S lights work on my auto, although a diagnostic does show the modes as working. Hopefully just bulbs.

Further to my last, I had my instrument cluster out just now. There are three green bulbs on the back that are replaceable, so you should be ok if just one has broken. My reason for doing it was to identify why my M&S lights don't work. It seems they are LCD's as part of the PCB. Hopefully I might know a man who can both check and replace them for me!
I hope yours is easier.
There is something yellow up in the sky today on occasions, any ideas?

quite unlikely that both M & S lights to be at fault... they are LED's which are very resistant.... IMO it's more possible to be some electrical input issue. If u are familiar with electrics and u are up to make some measurements yourself i can tell you where to check for voltage....it would help if you have RAVE to see the connector's position and pin disposals.
 
sierraferry, I am fairly familiar with electrics, as I have computer services business, building, repairing computers etc, so no problem. I have a multimeter and a copy of RAVE as well, but I don't profess to be either an auto electrician or an electrical genius by any means, but very happy to attempt to remedy the problem, with some guidance. I should add that as per my previous most I have not seen the M&S mode coming in and out on a diagnostic, only what I have been told, and offered to allow to see, but time was against me. However I have no reason to doubt what was said. I should add, just to complete the picture that, (touch wood!) there are no other problems that I am aware of, either in the instrument cluster or elsewhere, that might confuse the issue, it is only the M&S lights that don't work, nor do they come on when the ignition is first switched on as a test as everything else does.
Any help gratefully appreciated, where do I check? And although I have now put it back, presumably I need the cluster out again?

hi i have just bought a 2001 td5 disco. i have a light on my dash that is on constantly.its on the bottom and it looks like a car with arrows comeing out of either side. can anybody tell me whoat that light means as i dont have a manual
 
richy0707, I can tell you that the light is the ACE warning light or Active Cornering Enhancement. Whilst I am no expert, there are many on here who are much better qualified to answer you than me, the fact that the light is on suggests that your ACE is not working, and I would have though the car would wallow on corners, as the ACE is probably not compensating for the roll of the body. If all feels normal, then it maybe a fault with the sensor. Under the bonnet check the fluid level in the combined ACR and power steering pump header tank. I suggest that you search ACE on this forum where you will find much more information about diagnosing the problem. It probably doesn't help but at least you know what the light is now. No doubt others will provide you with much more detailed information about how to diagnose the issue. The ACE compressor is situated on the nearside chassis rail, and is a large square metal box with pipes and an electrical connection coming out of it.

That's a good start to DIY m8... first see in RAVE - Workshop manual - Instruments 88-38 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION - Gearbox manual/sport mode warning lamps ...there is a table with voltages...then look in Electrical Library - connector views ...see C0230 .... select mode with ignition on and measure on pin 4(Sport) and pin 5(Manual) ... if u have the voltages as in the table then u can see why they dont come on(maybe they were on for some reason and the previous owner "blanked" them with black tape or something...it's a practice with the 3 amigos but u never know) if no voltages we'll speak again...be aware that the M & S lights do not have self check
 
sierrafery, many thanks. I have located the relevent pages in RAVE and had not found the sections unaided, still trying to find my way though it. I will check tomorrow now and let you know. Presumably though, I should have the voltages as in the table? None of the LED's on the panel are "blanked" with tape, having had the pack out, so if not as per table then assuming the actual switch is working, presumaby a fault with the ECU under the drivers seat (LHD)? Will a diagnostic Hawkeye or similar diagnose an ECU fault, not that I have one?

check in the Diagrams section - Instruments (3'rd page) and you'll see the path of the feed for those lights... if u select e.g. Sport mode and the EAT ECU doesnt complete that earth path to enlight the LED it means that there is some ECU fault or a missing input/output... see in Workshop manual - Automatic gearbox 44-14 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION to identify the pins... if you get voltage there and no voltage at the instrument pack you'll know that it can be a wiring issue ... the feed for warning lamps from the ECU to dash is going through C0047 which used to have problems(find it in views)

turned onto side light and had a look at instrument cowl, light still not on,
funny thing a gave it a bat and the bloody thing lit up:eek:
so have not had to take to bits,
so if all else fails on a landrover, give it a bat and see!!:p

Checked voltage on C0230. On pin 4 (sport earth), I have a constant 10v regardless of pressing mode switch! On pin 5, (manual earth) I have 10v and on pressing mode switch this reduces to zero. I have also checked pins 15 and 16 on C0047, incidentally my connector layout is different to that shown in the manual. On my vehicle C0229 and C0067 are green and are the uppermost connector, C0023 and C0047 are the 2nd one down, as it were. However same result, as with C0230,10v constant on pin 15 and either 10v or zero on pin 16, so I guess its back to the ECU, pins 25 and 51 according to RAVE. Not sure if this function is related to the XYZ switch, or just controlled by the EAT ECU? Have I read somewhere this switch is prone to problems?
Incidentally, my smart (!) wife has noticed whilst assisting me that the gear indicator lamp in the digital odometer readout does not function either. It must be related, and if I read correctly, it is the BCU that provides that information to the instrument panel, and to the position indicators either side of the gear selector lever, but that lights up correctly, indicating what gear you are in, just the odometer gear display does not work.
I will post the results of the EAT ECU test asap.

on that mode where the earth path voltage drops below 1.8 V the LED must come on... it seems you're on top of it so insist in that area. Run some circuit tests with tester for those lamps if u have the chance,... check the BCU settings, maybe for some odd reason it's setted on manual instead of auto... the voltage for the LED's is provided by the instrument pack managed by the BCU

Thanks for that. I agree the led should come on, I will carry out a led test if I can. Just a thought don't I need a diagnostic of some sort to check the BCU settings? And presumably I cannot check the EAT ECU once it is unplugged, as once unplugged no output as no input? I see there is a diagnostic plug for the EAT BCU, again presumably this needs a hawkeye or similar to connect to it?
