P38A Instant gasket as emergency on inlet manifold ?

Your heading says inlet manifold, the body of your post says exhaust manifold.
If it's the inlet then no reason why you shouldn't use RTV or gasket paper to make your own.
When I was young & skint we used to make gaskets for our old British bikes from cardboard cereal packets. Worked just fine.
Done that on MK2 cortina

Have a look locally for gasket sheets. They are usually already impregnated with whatever the waxy stuff is, and you just cut to fit.
Doubt if they'd have it here plus the old ones were brittled and snapped when removing so no template but thanks for the suggestion anyway

Bit of normal writing paper, hold it over the area where the gasket is intended for & rub over the area with a dirty finger.
You'll get the outline of the shape of where the gasket needs to fit.
Cut out with pair of sharp scissors & use as the template to draw round on suitable material.
Same works when cutting patches for welding.

Never guess what ? I went into proper old style parts shop and asked if on the off chance they had any gasket paper? Bloke just looked at me and said “ what thickness ? “ didn’t think as it’s an island and everything has to be imported it’s a fix yourself or no transport kinda place so made template out of cardboard then cut 6 gaskets and seated them with a thin line of instant gasket just for belt and braces. I’ve took a few photos. Tools needed- 9mm wood bit, Stanley knife, scissors, pencil, gasket paper, and do it on a wood base if possible as it makes it easier.

Also as inlet manifold was removed to replace glow plugs I took some photos as well. Made sure to rub a bit of silicone grease around the threads first and as with the nuts on end of plug I also pushed them into socket with a bit of kitchen roll to hold them tight so I wouldn’t lose them. Thanks for advice lads.

Silicone on the threads of the glowplugs is no a good idea IMO as silicone is a good insulator, Copaslip is better.

I managed to find two pieces and drew round them thanks

Well, they aint coming out again hah hah. After an hour of inlet manifold nuts at finger tightness I tightened them properly and gave it a test run. Started on the button ! and was ok going into town but lost turbo coming back. As it was late and dark I left it until today for fresh eyes expecting I had forgotten to put vaccum pipe back on maff sensor but upon inspection today the big red silicone pipe from turbo had come off so I must have forgotten to tighten up clamp, did this and took for a test run down to local ferry as they have a big hill coming back and we kicked down and took off on the way back, the old girl seems to be running better than ever.

I doubt you will ever get them out once that silicone bakes hard:eek: glad to hear you got it running:)

To make you feel better I forgot to tighten turbo hose back up when I did my glow plugs last year. Happens to us all.
Well done on a good job Do agree with Keith though would have used coppaslip instead of silicon
