Had a mechanic friend over today, he said the injectors may be causing my morning cold start stuttering...can't give it any throttle for a minute or so or it cuts out....

After a minute it's fine and no more blue smoke...

Then runs like a dream

How much are they?

Cheers

I doubt it would be injectors, more likely air getting in the fuel system somewhere.

sounds like theres air getting into system although is doesnt really explain why it runs fine after a minute, i think maybe the lift pump is letting the fuel drop and therefore meaning you need to affectively bleed the system when you start it in morning. h

how long does it take to turn over ?

i had a similar problem to this once and it turned out to be the crank case breather, the lil black round thing that sits up by the rocker cover. soon as i swapped it engine ran perfectly. but that was literally after trying everything with fuel system

things like , draining primary filter, changing secondary filter, test lift pump, f.i.p, and all injectors tested too.

land rovers are fun arent they lol

hhhm perhaps, they are a lil oily normaly, the trouble with the things is they are more complicated than they look, so have a nose around it to see if its cracked, or as you mentioned the seal isnt good. it may well solve it

I tested the car earlier today for compression with a mechanic friend, all good, about 400 psi. One we couoldn't test as glow plug had been snapped at the top so we tried using an easy out bit, that then snapped off!! so now left with a snapped of bit embedded thats sitting flush so nothing to get hold of....
Any ideas how to get it out?
Steve

oh dear , easy outs are cack i always leave them as a very last resort, in my world i have access to a metal smith when things like this happen, i get him to weld a nut on the flush part and comes out nice and easy . if you have any welding kit this will make very light work of it. other wise the other options are to never hav a 4th glow plug again lol. or strip it down and remove it.

as said before that we dont think the injectors would be the cause of your troubles. have you checked your lift pump ? the lil hand primer thing. trouble is mate the compression is fine once running as you said so i would expect the compression to be good, also compression is only demonstrating that the pistons are working really.

injector testers isnt something many people have as a drive way part., your friend may have one at work though this is normally a manufacturing device.

i really reccomend you trail the whole fuel system, check the fuel in each filter. make sure the cars cold . if one filter is half empty then you know that fuel is dropping at that point and youll know where to start if its the filter in engine bay then itll be the lift pump not retaining pressure to hold the fuel up.

i realise i havent asked if you have had the egr removed ?

Yep, egr removed. I put a new lift on 3 weeks back. Cleaned out the cyclone crankcase breather.
How do I detect an air leak in a hose? Is it just by looking at the condition of the hose?

thats a good point , hard to give advice online lol, never tried to give so much before. soapy water will show an air leak on a pipe, but it would be hard to see, and air leak wouldnt make it cut out, you would just have lack of power, as the pressure will be low.

blue smoke , could be a cold start fault, over fueling under fueling so on .

are the glow plugs working have you tested them on the car out of the head using the glowplug wiring and just earthing the plugs against the head to see them glow
i have seen people say i fitted new glow plugs but never checked to see if they work

the cold start is ya glow plugs really mate id check to see if they are working properly, changing them isnt enough as you may have fiutted another fault instead of repaired it . get a manual itll have all ya first check areas in there

Is it auto? if so check wiring to no4 injector, i had this problem & it gave symptoms of air in system. Also if you fit clear fuel pipe between fuel filter & lift pump if there is air in system you will see bubbles in the pipe.
