Injector pump gone bang :(

Hey there, recently lost power at high revs on the motorway. Got recovered back to a garage, the mechanic has had a look through the fuel system and has diagnosed it as a failed injector pump.

Apparently it’s disintegrated and left metal swarf all through the diesel system. Is this something anyone else has seen before? He said he has never seen a defender injector pump fail like this before but didn’t offer up any more detail!

My local diesel pump rebuilders tells these types of stories regularly. The common culprit (here in Ireland) is from the more "sub prime" rural fuel stations supplying fuel mixed with bio diesel from various sources.
This unregulated bio diesel lacks the lubricity of the regular EN590 spec of road diesel. Diesel pumps and injectors use the diesel as a lubricant as well as a fuel and its under high pressures in the fuel system.
Although I don't want to start a problem, I would be keen to know where you sourced your last few diesel fills.

Ah interesting. I normally fill up in the Tesco stations, either that or a main Texaco/BP/Shell type place.

Not heard of that one myself.
The bosch pumps are bloody good, unless they have had veg in them.

In the distribution head on the back of pump, the rotor sheds its hard layer, pushing swarf through the injectors, i think claret accelerates the process!

I put 100ml of 2 stroke oil (Stihl) in with 40ltr of diesel (400:1 ratio).
Not suitable for the newer (common rail) engines but will help lubrication in the older Bosh FiP landies.

I don't especially want to disagree with you, but biodiesel is way more slippery than mineral diesel.

A 200tdi pump's original front seal would be degraded by methyl esters, but, once changed to a viton one, there would be no issue at all running on even quite ropey bio fuel.

not sure if this helps but Supermarket diesel has cheaper (crap) additives in which is why its always cheaper(est) meets the min standard but is only designed to just meet it. I would always avoid supermarkets if you can or add to it yourself.

I think that is bit of a myth.
So long as it meets standard even if only just then it must be good enough.
Been running my d3 on morrisons and asda fuel for years.

I don’t know whether it’s some dodgy fuel or if the pump has just passed its best - it’s 30 odd years old with over 200k miles now, thanks for all the replies - good to get other’s experiences with this!
