Hi All,

bit of a weird question, can anyone help me with a quirky indicator stalk?

the left signal works fine, stays on until after the turn, marvellous.

the right signal comes on ok, but then cancels itself after you move the steering wheel about 1/8th of a turn to the right. obv this is useless, as it cancels itself before i've really started turning!

I know I know, I'm in a 110, so why do I both to use them ;)

It's a '95 300tdi, not that it makes much difference.

Thanks

FS

I've found an ingenious solution to this problem, which solves it completely --

I hold the stalk until we're back on the straight again.

yours cancels itself?? Lucky bugger ;) :D

I kept forgetting mine hardly ever do unless i do a full lock turn in both directions...then it's temperamental whether it wants to cancel or not.

Mainly i leave it alone and watch those behind me waving their fists at me as i've gone past 10 left hand junctions with my indicator on..

Assuming the cancellation gubbins is working then it must be because your steering wheel is not properly aligned with the steering cancelling mechanism.

Farmershort is your steering wheel on straight with the wheels pointing staright ahead? What you describe is a classic symptom of a wrongly aligned steering wheel. If not then I have no idea what is wrong.

Paul Wilde here is what you need to do. Make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead. Once done dont move them until the steering wheel is refitted. Now assuming that your steering wheel is also on straight take it off without turning it and have a look at the plastic collar that does the cancelling. It should fit into the matching bit on the back of the steering wheel. The cancellation collar could be 180 degrees out which means that the wheel will have to turn almost a full turn to engage the cancelling function just like you describe. This is easlily fixed by rotating the plastic collar 180 degrees and refitting the steering wheel. Job done.

Hi, It's worth removing the plastic surround and checking the indicator stalk and the wiper switch. There are 3 different types of switches for the Defender 90/110. You may have the wrong one fitted. The switches have slightly different chassis configs. The Wiper and indicator stalks are matched pairs. If one is the wrong type it would cause this problem, as the bias would be wrong.

I'm afraid my wheels are indeed pointing straight forwards when the steering wheel is the right way up..... unless someone has turned the wheels by 180 ;)

With the wheels pointing forward, the steering wheel is slightly to the right, this is another job for the list of things to do.

Thanks for the tip Shifty :D

Farmershort.... thank god I found you... I thought I was the only person in the world with your symptoms :) I will just show the link.... it expains all but I have not got around to trying to fix it. You do get used to it.... http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/indicator-issue-defies-newton-some-fookers-law-101713.html

Just wondering if your Land Rover is grey... my mates wife reckons it could be the colour :)

hand painted nato green i'm afraid... nice one though, exactly the same symptom!

had the exact same problem with mine if you take the steering wheel off you will find a bracket ( could be stuck to the back of the wheel) you need to alter that (left or right) it takes some time to get it right but it is what cancels the indicators it should be in a set of grooves it should just twist (take the steering coloum covers off to give a betteer view of where bracket fits)

hope this helps

At least yours cancels :) mine dont .... i just live with it .
But anyway , me thinks someone has had your steering column off your box and didnt fit it back on the same place , but then turned the wheels on the splines . :) .

You can normally tell if this is the case because the steering lock does not engage unless you crank the steering wheel round. Steering lock should engage by turning the wheel just a tad off centre from the straight ahead position. This is adjusted by turning the shaft on the steering box splines. Takes ages to get it right but is most satisfying when you do.

I filed a couple of mm off the plastic covers where the rubber skirt sits (top and bottom) for the indicator stalk. It’s like the extra tension of the rubber makes it kick the indicator off. Also check alignment of plastic column cover, this can sway the the stalk to cancel whilst turning that direction.

Old post, but posting my solution that seems to work so far.
