I've embarked on the task of rebuilding the axles on my 1994 200tdi defender 90. The rear one appears to be a discovery item as it has disc brakes and looks like some mounts have been welded on, i believe this model came with drums, but i digress. I'm a young un' so never really worked with anything imperial and i'm not sure what socket sizes i need, so out with the vernier caliper to measure up.

The bolts for the A frame bush end is 3/4 unf (head is 28.8mm) so would need a 1 1/8 socket?
The nut is 27.1mm so needs a 1 1/16 spanner/socket?
The trailing arm nut and bolt is 23.8mm so needs a 15/16 socket, or a good 24mm six sided socket?
Front radius arms are either m16 or 5/8, not started on the front yet.

So basically my question is can anyone give me an idea of the bolt/nut type and the associated socket/spanner needed. Thank You.

your correct ,if its a fine thread or white plastic lock nut its imperial ,but either metric or imperial will do with nuts/bolts that size

Thanks for the fast response, i was most concerned by the 3/4 bolts as 30mm is the closest i have and didn't want to round the bolt, i know they go up to high torques like 175ish nm so figure best to get the right socket for the job.

Newcastle, think i've got all i need tbh. New bushes, bolts and ball joint, stubs, seals, bearings, gaskets, locking plate. Haven't started on the front but if i need something i'll give you a shout.

i do them regularly and whether you use a 15/16 or 24mm it doesnt matter, with a 30mm nut/bolt its unusual to have imperial equivalent 1.3/16,metric nylocs are blue plastic imperial white

Ah never knew about white and blue nylock, thats handy info. 30 was what worked to get it off when i was taking it apart but was sloppy. So think i'll get socket for the 3/4 UNF bolt and then just use 24m for the others. Thanks for the help

Glad to be here, love tynemouth go kayaking/surfing there often. Thankfully between me and my dad we have just about all the tools i need, looks like its just a 1.1/8 socket and a 1.1/16 spanner i need for the 3/4 UNF bolt. When it comes to putting it together and i need a tool I'll remember to ask you. Thanks

For the A-frame, you'll need a 1/8" socket. Imperials just don't fit. 28mm is too small, I could never find a 29mm and a 30mm will slip.

If a 28mm, 29mm or 30mm sockets won't fit, I have a slight feeling that an Imperial 1/8" socket might be just a tiny little bit too small anorl, even if it was a 1/8 gas :D:D

The trouble with pedants like me is that we can be a bit pedantic at times :p
'Ped' (n) pertaining to walking
'Antic' (n) doing daft things
Ergo 'Pedantics' are best suited to The Ministry of Silly Walks
