Immobiliser?

Hi . Just wondering if someone could offer advice regarding an intermittent starting issue. If I stop my 97 disco 300tdi, and leave keys in ignition for a while, when I go to start up it won't crank just a red key light Immobiliser warning symbol . If I turn alarm on and off a several times it clears the problem . It's a bit of a pain and I fear it's going to fail completely some day.Any advice appreciated.

That's normal it's called 'passive immobilising' move the fob nearer the ignition switch or press the unlock button to extinguish the lamp and remobilise you're engine. Information is in the owners handbook.

Tell us how u can turn the alarm and off on as normally there's no facility to do that.
Setting of the alarm system is automatic after a small delay period after locking the doors, and unsettling is when the door are unlocked all controled by an ECU.
Or do u mean locking/unlocking?
 
I' ve had a few D1s before and never experienced this . If for example i pull up at my home gates turn off engine leave keys in ignition get out open gates, immediately get back into car turn key it wont crank . I have to lock and unlock with fob maybe 3 or 4 times and after doing so it will crank.
I understand about the vehicle automatically immobilising itself if left unattended for a minute as per handbook. Am i correct ?

The engine will be immobilised 30 seconds after the engine is turned off and the drivers door opened.
I suggest you either leave the engine running, or switch off then leaving the vehicle lock it and unlock on returning to it as unlocking will remobilise, or as I suggested above in #2.
If you must lock and unlock then u do have an issue with the system.

+1 - 20 odd years of D1's - this is normal, expected, planned even:)

+1 - pressing the unlock button has always worked for me.. How is the range of the remote? if its down maybe change your fob battery to give a signal boost for the unlock.....
 
Yes i,put new battery in the fob and no difference .Fob Range seems weakish even sometimes have to press fob several times for a response . Where is the fob aerial receiver maybe its weak or covered up !
If i did the spider bypass job would it stop this annoying issue or is it the alarm.
I feel there is a fault as never had this behaviour previously. I know about setting after 30 secs doors closing etc thanks anyway
 
I mean locking and unlocking turns immobiliser off and I can then crank engine again, except sometimes I have to press open with fob button several times. I fear either fob signal is weak or receiver .If I bypass immobiliser with the spider cable should this sort problem out, and I still be able to use central locking etc.
 
Update ..... my fob buttons were working intermittently , tried to solder and repair but too difficult . Eventually rewired bypassed and now have a reliable disco. no spider, alarm etc and still have central locking working. I am delighted . Thanks

Hello - I'm having exactly the same issue with my fob. Intermittent and frustrating. It's now seemed to stop altogether and my disco 1 is stuck in a parking garage. I'm trying to understand this spider and bypass, but can I do it on my own, where it sits, or do in need to have her towed?

Yes you can, google "spider bypass" or do a search on this site , there are a few how to's on the internet.
