If I leave the key out or ignition off for a few minutes the immobiliser kicks in and i have to lock and unlock the car using the fob, I only have one fob so if it breaks or the battery dies I'll be without a paddle.

Should I fix or disable?

1998 300tdi D1

Any help appreciated šŸ‘

Itā€™s calledā€˜ passive immobilisingā€™ so they all do that, no need to lock and unlock just pressing the unlock button on the fob will remobilise the engine and if working correctly the placing the fob close to the ignition switch.
You will get an indication that the fobs battery is failing, and thereā€™s more information on the security system in the D1 owners handbook.

A firm called Remote Key can supply replacement fobs, also loan you the programmer.

Thanks for the reply, I'll see if I can find my owners manual. My fob is actually from remote keys, must be 8 years or so since I bought it.

Had a quick read of the manual, all this time I've been locking and unlocking when I could have just pressed the unlock button šŸ˜…

Putting the key in with the fob close to the barrel doesn't work, I do have a barrel from a different car tho. Could that be the problem?

Another thing which is annoying me is that I have to have the fob to the window for it to work, it used to work from quite a way away.

Google out AMR4888, THIS might be your issue with the passive immobiliser if you didnt fit it to the replacement barrel cos it's there to "communicate" with the fob... though i strongly recommend to buy a second fob too

My everyday fob failed with the ā€œclose to the ignition switchā€ function after about 18 years, so out came the nearly new reserve fob which is in a fully functional used now, the original fob is now the ā€˜just in caseā€™ reserve and functional using the unlock button now.

Being close to the vehicle for the fob to communicate is a sign the fobā€™s battery is low, another other is just one indicator flash when locking/unlocking, the vehicles battery has some bearing on the distance, but in my experience 4or 5 meters away for my D1 from day 1 and I believe thats similar to other UK D1s with the receiver near the glove box

As soon as I googled the part number I remembered that it's not even on the steering column šŸ¤£

Just tested while holding the ring to the fob and it worked šŸ’Ŗ

Thanks again šŸ˜

I shall buy a new battery and post back with results, worth mentioning none of my indicators flash when I lock the car, also the siren is not attached.

Thanks again šŸ˜

New battery and a new fob, both working around the same distance but still not as far as it used to be.

ATM it works maybe a meter behind the car.

Happy with it tho, much better than it was and now I have a backup fob šŸ˜

If I get time this weekend I'll put the ring back on the column.

Cheers for the help šŸ‘

Sooo, had a go at fitting the coil and it appears I have something missing from my ignition barrel.

ATM the coil has nothing to attach to, any clue on what's missing?

Cheers šŸ»

Bloody thing fell apart, new barrel came today.

Same problem with the coil, it doesn't fit or lock into anything. Just kinda hangs there.

Iā€™m only going by your photos as Iā€™ve never been there, so it appears that the coil is just a a sliding fit over the key barrel, without any such thing as plastic lugs, that always snap, to retain it, so that leaves the steering column cowl to retain it when it is fitted maybe, or some DIY with a couple of strips of sticky tape before fitting.
