Im about to give up on this thing

This reminds me of a mystery engine problem from a year or so ago - it was wear in the crank key/keyway altering the timing at speed/load. Of course, the TD5 has a crank position sensor, which could cause problems, but a good diagnostic read would pick a problem up.
Yeah im hoping if i do get it plugged in they will find the problem

Bring it yo a main dealer, spend an hours labour, gotta be worth the cost surely.
Yeah like i said was hoping the things ive done which causes most the problems ive read up on would of sorted it, alot of reading has suggested diagnostics alot of the time dont show the problem, im kind of only going by whats been said hundreds of times before on same problem

diagnostics works but only if the person doing it can look at all the information the diagnostics give them and can used logic and experience to get the bottom of the problem, if you can get a test carried out then there are people on here that might help you to get to the bottom of problem, I have had help and advice from many that have pointed me in the right direction good luck

The same symptoms might not be the same problem.

Sorry yeah td5, no modulator on the defender

So it is a tD5?
Does the wastegate modulator move freely? I have a similar problem with mine and when I checked my modulator was frozen solid. I've got it moving a little which has certainly improved things. I bought a new modulator for £35 and will be fitting it this weekend.
Could this be your problem too?

hi all, nearly gone bald over this, searched and searched but, the old revving and vibration problem!
Ive changed
Turbo hoses
Air filter
Intercooler
Fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel filter
Egr removed
Injector harness
Cleaned ecu
Wastgate free
Fitted rev counter boost gauge
H/d front+rear props
Just had discco transferbox fitted
Think thats it to try and sort problem, basically pulls well boosts well starts well, revs straight up to say 4000rpms when stationary but get to 2500rpms underload when driving and its struggling to go past plus noise/vibrations kind of thing, really narked off with it. Dont know what else plus pocket is now very empty! Please somebody shed some light on this common pain in the ass problem!

I have just got to the bottom of an issue with mine that sounds very similar to yours nothing was showing on any diagnostic equipment.
mine when cold ran well but as the engine warmed up symptoms as yours at 2500rpm under load vibrations and little pulling power. The vibration was just like out of balance wheel. OK I will cut to the chase:- The clip on the turbo hose (the first one from the turbo) was a heavy duty one quite an hefty piece of metal (it did look the part) but and the engine, turbo and the exhaust heated up this clip expanded allowing the turbo boost pressure to escape so acting as a pressure relief valve.
Not saying yours is exact same problem but look for a leak on the boost side of the turbo.

Hi pal, yeah id thought about crank position sensor, its one of them things trucks spot on upto that dreaded 2500rpms which was at 2000rpms ehen it had the defender transfer box in. Top speed was 55-60! Albeit since transfer change i now seem to have a clunkier gearchange?

Yeah thats whats kind of put me off diagnostics, think ive had every car ive owned at some point on them and never sorted a single issue! Money down drain!

Cheers tim, yeah im pretty use to turbo mods etc so changed hoses and clips first along with an upgraded intercooler, while fitting the new fuel pressure regulator at weekend i pulled all hoses off and madesure everything looked ok

I agree , hence trying to sort and find myself with help from you chaps once again

Diagnostics are not a catch all... just another tool in your arsenal.

Modern car's require a multi pronged approach of both technological analysis, physical examination and good old experience. Remove any one of these things and your going to make life harder.

Experience is unfortunately the one thing you can not buy... it gives you the test first and the lesson afterwards.

Without seeing the vehicle, all we can do is rattle off possible problems of which there are many.

I agree 100% its just trusting any local so called specialists after having bits done with them or hearing stories of others
