hi all, nearly gone bald over this, searched and searched but, the old revving and vibration problem!
Ive changed
Turbo hoses
Air filter
Intercooler
Fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel filter
Egr removed
Injector harness
Cleaned ecu
Wastgate free
Fitted rev counter boost gauge
H/d front+rear props
Just had discco transferbox fitted
Think thats it to try and sort problem, basically pulls well boosts well starts well, revs straight up to say 4000rpms when stationary but get to 2500rpms underload when driving and its struggling to go past plus noise/vibrations kind of thing, really narked off with it. Dont know what else plus pocket is now very empty! Please somebody shed some light on this common pain in the ass problem!

I will take a guess that it is a td5.

Wild card question: I understood they are not fitted to defender td5's, but just in case does it have a wastegate modulator fitted?

Cheers

Hi I’m not completely sure on drop off, but would look at the fuel system. Could be either air/water ingress somewhere. Is it missing or juddering.

In reference to the knocking, have you checked your suspension? Sometimes the nut has been known to have come of the bottom of the shocker causing it to knock at speed. Worth checking as if it has and it unmounts, the could spring will pop out and you can roll.

Does it have a fuel sedimenter?
Had very similar symptoms with a RRC diesel recently. Sedimenter was almost full of crud, don't think it had been drained in years, as I'm doing a very long winded catch-up service and doing very few miles on it I didn't pick this up and it caused all sort of fuel problems.

Injectors sucking air?
White smoke coming out the exhaust?

Get a proper land rover diagnostic computer on it... they pic up on all sorts of things cheap code readers miss such as failing sensors on the engine etc.

Get a Hawkeye if you want to do it all yourself... they are worth their weight in gold.

Yeah next thing to do allthough its trusting somebody local to diagnose what they see properly as seen so many posts on this and diagnostics didnt help

No drives spot on upto said revs

This reminds me of a mystery engine problem from a year or so ago - it was wear in the crank key/keyway altering the timing at speed/load. Of course, the TD5 has a crank position sensor, which could cause problems, but a good diagnostic read would pick a problem up.
