afternoon,

I want to wire a two button start setup for my defender 90 (disco tdi)

on the back of the ignition switch i have the following
  • Red/Brown glowplug
  • Brown main 12v feed from battery
  • White ign controlled feed to rest of wiring loom
  • White and Black 12v feed to fuel shutoff soleniod on FIP
  • White and Red to starter soleniod & brake check relay & start relay

above taken from another forum !! so hope is correct

i then have to 30amp switches. one is an on/off (two terminals) the other is a mom (two terminals)

based on the wires i have, can someone assist and tell me what goes where...

please ...

D

So you want to be able to start the engine without using the ignition key?

It's possible to wire up - but would you want a theif to be able to start it easily without a key???

theft not so much an issue as I have a complete battery immobilizer that disconnects the battery from everything (big red key)

If you want to do push start I would fit a one way valve on your clutch so if it is depressed and the key isn't in then it locks your clutch in the depressed position

battery is in the seat box under passenger seat ... seats are aftermarket and bolted down so yes, thief could unbolt and remove seat, apply jump lead (once they had removed the fixed cowling on the back of the isolator, clamp up and bypass.

or, i could leave the ignition key in place for steering lock

so on that basis, can we get back to the wiring?

please

they often use hiabs now any way so you can isolate what you want. You need to bolt it down

lol omg ... if they use a hiab its gone switches or not ... so we have established that the keys are staying in place ...

ok, now we are getting somewhere...

does this sound right

electrics on/off switch

Pin 1 : BROWN WIRE ONLY
Pin 2 : RED|BROWN, WHITE and WHITE|BLACK

starter switch

Pin 1 : BROWN WIRE ONLY
Pin 2 : WHITE|RED

thanks in advance,

DAn

I haven't done this myself but I think you will need another switch

Red/Brown glowplug
Brown main 12v feed from battery
White ign controlled feed to rest of wiring loom
White and Black 12v feed to fuel shutoff soleniod on FIP
White and Red to starter soleniod & brake check relay & start relay

Switch 1. Turn on ignition, brown main feed to white feed to loom and white and black to fuel shut off
Switch 2 glow plugs, brown main feed to red /brown
Switch 3 main feed to white and red starter

Unplug the wires from the back of the barrel and check that the continuity matches what I said above but I imagine it should

what happens if switches 1 and 2 are wired in the same switch (I have a four pole on off so that could take that weight of wires and is rated at 30amp?

I guess what i am verifying is that switches one and two are on and switch 3 is pushed to start the truck. then 1 and 2 stay on until i want engine off.

So for someone wiring up just the glow plugs to a button would it be the brown wire to one side of the switch and the red/brown wire to the other side of the switch?
Also, how many amps are the glow plugs pulling on a NA 2.5 diesel?
(Sorry if anybody sees this as a thread hijack, lots of good info here)
