if my back diff was on its way out

if my back diff was on its way out would there be a grinding noise comin from underneath if not what would cause it, its not a clonking noise more like metal on metal thanks paul.

have you checked your UJs

no mate will do in a minute though nice 1, how can i check them though apart from looking at them and havin a play about with them, what would bee the signs if they r ****ed, thanks paul

first up chock the wheels so you don't run yourself over!

then slide under the landy grab the rear propshaft (i would put money on it being the front but i like to start with the rear) move it side to side and up and down there should be no play in it at either end, then move onto the fron prop and do the same you will mostlikely find the rear UJ of the front prop has lots of play in it

i had a clonking noise like metal on metal, turned out to be wheel bearing

pull half shafts out (if thier not broken) and then engage 4 wd diff lock and pull forward if anythings broken it will drop into the diff and the diff will lock. happened to me with my defender lost 4wd unless in diff lock pulled the half shafts out and were fine pulled foward and someting dropped into the diff ,diff locked up and then popped out the back. more cautious route may start with draining diff oil look for metal bits, or castle nut come loose at front of diff

And ya propshaft uj`s???? How was they????

they seem ok when both gear sticks in neatural there is play in them but thats normal isnt it to be honest i think its my back driver side bearing sounds like its comin from there anyway will put new ones in on sat might aswell change them both thanks paul.

just jacked it up an there is play in the wheel safe to say its the bearing. i undone the first nut and the second nut needed tightening it was loose the hub still has a bit of play in it, are bearings easy to do do i have to take the hub. thanks paul
