Anyone come up with good ways of detecting where engine noises are coming from on a diesel??

Whole engine rattles and so much noise when you put a stethoscope on that you can't pin it down. Mine has a top end rattle and it is impossible to source.

Just wondered if anyone has cracked identifying noises in a diesel engine ??

Thanks

I'm slowly working my way through the various rattles in mine. My front bumper was loose, causing all sorts of odd noises. Check that all the pipework is correctly routed and clipped in. Use extra packing and zip ties if necessary.

O.k so it was driving me mad. Sort of rumbly rattle that seemed to come from everywhere. Mostly at the top - how wrong were my ears !

Took off lower tray and ran engine. Observed sparkly brass dust in the air. Ah - main crank pulley I thought. Put stethoscope on various bits (without ripping my ears off in the belts) and it is the air con pulley. Took off most of tension to air con belt and it stopped. Switched on air con and it came back.

Loads of posts about changing bearing - but anyone know where to get one please? Also small 10mm bolt on end turns whole thing, how to hold it still??
