Help! I was in the process of replacing my Defender 90 front wheel bearings when I found the stag / lock washer will not fit the hub profile. The washer supplied in the bearing kit and all photos etc on the internet have a flat to stop the washer from spinning, while my hub has a smaller cutout? Has the front axle been replaced? I would upload photos but I'm not sure how to on this thread?
Any comments would be appreciated
Cheers

They changed them at some point, some kits come with both lock washers.

You can get the other style lock washer with the small tab for the groove in it. If I was you I woud call your local indie and ask if they have a spare one for sale.

Thanks, this is a relief that its nothing too oddball and something I should be able to buy without too much trouble.

google 217353 and 217352
Thanks for the part number, I can see what happened now as the story unfolds. The reason I was replacing the bearings was because they came loose! I could believe when I found the stag washer had no tag to fit into the cutout. I really thiught someone had bodged the washer somehow as it had these two little holes in it but now realise that is where the tag should be.

The holes being the rounded cutouts either side of the tag. So why did the tag apparently shear off leaving the two nut locked together to gradually unwind? This is the right hand front wheel so if it was the left wheel does the hub have a RH thread, in which case the wheel would have come off in seconds!!!

all rh threads ,nuts have moved shearing the tab ,tab might have been weakened by been reused,or outer lock nut tightened up enough

Its strange and rather worrying that this happened after running the car for 4 years so I guess it has sheared at some point while driving rather than something that happened when ever someone last worked on the bearings. Certainly food for thought and I certainly wouldn't be reusing these washers given what can happend/

Thanks for the help
