I think its a "ringer"

Which bits?

the number plates and the the chassis number?

Cheers

Firstly I know now't about defenders other than they are noisy and get nicked a lot (and I would still like one) but I believe in general it's the chassis that goes with the V5.
Since the reg and chassis match the V5 is it possible that that the OP is worrying over nothing. Just trying to give them a glimmer of hope.

If you paid for a history check does that not come with a certain level of insurance?

Is it not possible that someone legitimately bought a scrap TD5 and just swapped the bit's over?
I would have thought that HPI checks come with some sort of insurance however they would fight tooth and nail not to pay out by then the 'ringer' is out there in the public domain, open for repossession or seizing/scrapping.

You could buy a scrap Td5 and swap over the parts, but looking at the evidence so far I would say 99% of the parts have been swapped - a lot of work, would be easier to just buy a Td5 in the first place.

Looking at the photos there's not much evidence of chopping . I can't see how its genuine either as the chassis number is tdi. Still reckon its a clever number swap.

The thing with the HPI check is in essence its right, id for the vehicle wont show as stolen as it would be the TD5 that is. For someone like me with limited knowledge it all checked out. The V5 says 90 Defender Turbo Diesel 2.5 ltr - check. Body type - ligth 4x4 utility - check colour - green - check VIN number - Check

Since the reg and chassis match the V5

This is my take on it.

Chassis appears to be TD5 , fuel tank position, cross member.
Body is TD5
Engine is TD5

Stamped chassis number is for a 91 vehicle.

I think if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, chances are it is a ???

As an example, I could argue the above by saying the follwoing.

Mine has tD5 body from the bulkhead back,
but the fuel tank sits in the original place on the chassis.
Engine is 300tdi, but I can see where the original 19J engine mounts places were.

As I said before , I would suggest the OP, scrubs the chassis clean by the chassis number and looks to see if there is any welding there.

Cheers

I think its increasingly looking like its a TD5, the question is what do i do for the best ? What happens in 5 years if i want to sell it? do i just say its past can't be verified. Would putting it on a private plate make a difference or make it look more dodgy ? Thanks

If you were to try and sell it to anyone who knows landies , then they would question it. Anyone else probably would not notice it.

Personally , I would not touch it if I was offered it.

As I said above. I would scrub the area on the chassis, check to see if you can see welding. See what you can find.

Sorry, but that is how I see it.

Goodluck and I hope I am wrong.

Cheers

Thats a very good question, private plates could help, never thought about that really. I would keep it and act dumb. Bling it up and enjoy it, whatever harm has been done is in the past as long as it stays there all is well. I'd be angry though that I'd been conned and would probably start shouting and chucking things at the bloke that sold it......bet you can't find him now though. If you can get hold of him face him off about it and gauge his reaction, then you'll know for sure.

This chap might be able to help

I can't see what you are worrying about, paperwork all checks out ok and it has passed the MOT checks which include vehicle i.d check and there are many, many older defenders on the road that have had some parts or whole body or chassis swapped from newer defenders. Use it enjoy it keep it and stop worrying. (A defender is for life not just for Christmas.) Unless it gets nicked.
