Did put this in disco section but thought it might be more relevant here.....

Hi everyone, towing my daughter's horse from Folkestone to Gloucester. 40 mins from Gloucester on the A417 yesterday. I suffered a runaway. Black smoke and loss of power. Pulled over and as soon as I dipped the clutch it started. High revs. White smoke everywhere. I can't describe how much there was. Turned ignition off and managed to stall it in 5th. I'm guessing the extra weight of the trailer helped. I feel I managed it with in 20 seconds so I'm really hoping no damage to the engine. I won't know till I get the car back. RAC couldn't get it home with me so I got a hire car home, car will be delivered in 3 to 5 days time. Only just got it back on the road after loads of welding and lots of new stuff including a radiator, front and rear brakes, front bearings, a frame ball joint, track rod ends and lots of other little stuff. Really gutted. When I get the car back I'll see if my dash cam caught it.....
Anyone else had this and engine been okay?
James

I had it not long ago on my 200tdi, I got a fuel injection pump of a mate which he says was running fine so swapped it
over & it fired up after bleeding. It was ticking over nicely & I went over to the shed it started revving up by itself getting
higher n higher, I jumped in to stall it...........clutch to the floor Oh O lol I loosened the fuel line feed to the IP & closed it
then opened it & it cut out. It didnt get to full on revving its nuts off so was lucky I didnt put the tools away. :)

Possible its your turbo thats went & put oil into the intake.

Yes, definitely turbo. I feel I stopped it fairly quick. It went while driving but as in gear and moving the drivetrain held it back. Wasn't till I pulled over and dropped the clutch that it went for it. I was surrounded by smoke. So much so that a driver going past called the fire service. Two trucks turned up. An anticlimax for them. Oil splashed around the turbo but nothing on the ground. I just hope I saved the engine but can't check till it's delivered home.

Doesnt sound like it was catastrophic fingers crossed its fine, ive just given a mate a 300tdi turbo or I could have sent it to you.

On a side note, I know that my 99 disco has had a boost pin fitted by the previous owner. It's something I've never touched, is it possible that could cause a turbo to fail if set up wrong and how easy is it to put everything back to what it should be, it always had black smoke on hard throttle under load. I assumed it was due to the boost pin??

I'm not media savvy, I wouldn't know how to use you tube. Lol
Make an account on YouTube (you can sign up with your google/apple account if you've got one).

On mobile, whilst logged in, use the + button to add a video. You'll be able to upload direct from your camera gallery

Once your vid is uploaded, click the 3 vertical buttons (to the right of the video title. You can see them in screenshot above) and select share

Then simply paste the link into a post on your thread.

This is all on mobile, desktop is pretty much the same though. If you can navigate this forum you'll pìss youtube mate 😅

You stopped it pretty sharpish, you might be ok 👍🏻

The anglo-saxon is understandable 😂
I've turned it over by hand and it seemed fine. Then when I checked my camera, low and behold the recovery scrotes have started it and moved it 3 times at the recovery yard. Even when the RAC key tag said "does not run." The first time I can hear one say to another. "Doesn't start. My arse!"
They could have done more damage as when I got it back, the oil was just below the actual dipstick. 😕

Everything is now stripped and cleaned. The turbo axle had snapped completely and bits of journal bearing floating around inside. Compressor housing was shot but had a spare. Exhaust has crack just inside where the impeller goes plus the impeller has worn that too. I have a perfect spare but two of the turbo mounting bolts snapped and I unsuccessfully drilled out two downpipe studs 😕
Looking around there's not a lot to choose from so I'll have to refit my old one for now. 😔😔

I've never had much luck drilling snapped bolts out 😕 see if you can cut bolts flush and drill out to just M6 then tap. Should get you by til you can get parts
