I need advice on 2a ambulance

You can put an auto in a Series landrover but its tough with the 2.25 engine. The few that are done tend to be Rover v8's with auto boxes.
 
Have a look/ask on the series2forum, there were a few auto conversions, nearly all were done due to disabilities.

That would be my preferred method, followed by a v8 and the matching auto from an old range rover. Neither of which keep originality, but both are doable with a bit of engineering to keep the vehicle usable.

Using a donor also means you've got all the required parts at hand and you can see the engine and box running
