I,m new to Land Rovers....please help!!!

Hi all,
As a newbee to the world of Series 3's, I know absolutely nothing about them, so maybe someone out there can help!
Problem 1: The yellow knob will not stay down, therefore I'm unable to select 4WD high!
Problem 2: It would appear that the hand brake is stuck on! ( That's what it feels like anyway!)
It pulls away in 4WD low ( although there is resistance), but really struggles in 2WD high! If it makes any difference, it has got free wheeling hubs.
Any solutions or ideas would be really appreciated.

Is your high low ratio - red knob - lever in the fully forward position?

As far as I am aware, yes. I was also wondering, does the handbrake work by stopping the propshaft from rotating? If so, could it be seized?

yep handbrake works on the propshaft. and could well be seized easiest way to findout is to release the handbrake and push the vehicle or crank it over in gear.

if it's been stodd for a while with the transmission brake on then it's very likely to have seized on - if you are able to get the vehicl emoving you'll soon know as the drum will be fecking hot

it might also just be badly adjusted and not releasing fully

Hi guys, i'm parkdude from Malaysia.. just won a tender (LR109 SIII 1978, ex-police),
i do have the same problem as fire49.
1. gear neutral + red at high post but yellow wont stay down.
2. gear neutral + red at low post + yellow remain up = but when i moved on, it seemed that only 2wd rear is on, not 4wd.

required advises. Thank you guys..

You can contact members at Land Rover Owner's Club in KL, if you're not already on there. Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia. Very helpful bunch of people. Alena and Ah Tek have a workshop for their own fleet of Land Rovers, they might be able to help.

on me SIII 88" the red lever (going from low to high)was used to release the yellow lever.Can you run in high 4wd?

YES.

But it is extremely inadvisable for several reasons, and if you try it on icy roads you'll soon find out one of them when you try taking a corner.

To engage 4WD high range just blast the yellow know down, and it should stay down.

The only way to get it up again is to stop, then change the red knob from HI to LO and back again.

OK ... so you don't NEED to stop, but chances are you'll make a bad noise and mangle the transfer gears. Smart people do it first time they stop after they no longer need 4WD.
