today as I was driving along the dual carriage way it felt like my car was being held back, as I slowed down and went on to the slip road off the carriage way I noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust the car then slowed right down and stopped I noticed the amber engine warning light on. I switched the ignition off for a few minutes then tried to start the car again it took about 3 attempts to start her but it started and I drove slowly home. After leaving it for an hour I tried starting it again but it would not start.

Have you checked coolant level ,oil level ? Driving the car home has probably finished off the engine ! If you didnt know what was wrong why did you keep driving ?

That was the wife who posted about her Freelander. I don't think she had much choice as she was picking up the kids and her two friends. Oil and coolant are fine as I serviced the vehicle 5 weeks ago.

Do you have any idea?

trying to diagnose at distance on someones description , is somewhat tricky . I notice you mention you serviced 5 weks ago , have you physically checked since the incident ? do you have a plug in diagnostic , as you could then get fault codes that would help steer you in right direction . What colour was smoke from exhaust? does th engine rotate at normal speed whilst not starting ?

Ok, here goes. I have just been outside to see what is happening.

a) Car won't start
b) With the ignition on I hear the low pressure fuel pump continually priming, but never actually stops making a noise.

In the past when I turned the ignition on, you would hear a short noise whilst it primed and then stop priming. So, my guess is that the low pressure fuel pump has gone?

Or it could be an injector. I will do a leak back test first to see if that is the problem.

Thanks

If you can get a OBD hook up , it will tell you if you have low pressure , as you correctly surmised it wont start with low pressure , to protect the final high pressure pump. Doesnt explain the smoke from exhaust part , although that could indeed be an injector , and that would also show up on leak test . Hopefully if either of those , not a wrecked engine :)

The OBD hook up is the problem as I don't know anyone near me who has one. It's not a wrecked engine. I tried firing it earlier using easy start, and it started and then died again.
