Here is my story before I start may I suggest you find a comfy chair and grab a brew.
my story starts just April last year when I replaced my Turbo with a "cheap ebay" chinese job, some give good reviews on theses and I thought it was worth the gamble.
Turbo fitted and all running well. 3 weeks later its time to go away for the weekend in the caravan so off we went up the M6 and pulled off to grab a expensive brew and burger at the services, just as I was pulling into a parking space then "ping" a warNing came up "STOP! LOW OIL PRESSURE" just as I was turning the key to switch off "mmm thats strange" I said to the Mrs so I checked the oil level and all seemed well, at this point I would like to point out that I have owned this 3lt td6 for about 7 mths and in that time I have had oil and filter changes 4 times as everytime it went in the garage for any work I asked them to drop oil and change filter. finished our brew and decided to start the car and see if the warning would ping again as im well aware of false messages coming up ie HD inactive etc etc, started her up and revved a little, NO messages and all seemed well so we ste of on our merry way. ten miles later this strange tapping noise started, obvious thoughts, turn radio down, mmm not that oh dear the engine cut out and we coasted into the hard shoulder lifted bonnet (almost as many times as i have been in the boot) and thins under there were a little hot. Got taken home by a nice man with a big truck following day towed the Rangy to garage who soon found that the oil pump had decided to stop working. so replacement fitted bottom end looked at and Big end shells replaced just on showed slight sign of wear started but a knocking could be heard "DAM" so we decided to replace Hydraulic lifters still knocking "Double DAM" so thought I know she's done 125,000 miles lets do timing tensioner kit, still knocking "Triple DAM". have taken her to a Landrover specialist who said "Oh dear sounds like little end trouble to me" to which I said "Oh dear sounds expensive" to which he replied "Oh yes, its replacement engine time".
my question is what is my best option, can the existing engine not be rebuilt by specialist cheaper? I can find engines on ebay but how can you tell if they are goosed or not and does anyone know somewhere who can do a complete job what ever is best at the right price the car is a 2002 and had a new auto box fitted 5000 miles before I bought it. Folks ask me "what you thing of your Range Rover"? my answer is this "its like going out with Miss World you know she is a stunner and you fall in love with her looks and how she feels, and because of this you put up with the amount of crap you get off her and the amount of times she lets you down and the amount of hard earned cash you have to throw at her to keep her happy".....

I like the comparison to Miss world. I compare Range Rovers to stately homes. They look very grand, impressive and imposing but are always a little threadbare and frilly around the edges, the upkeep is massive but the person who lives in it always loves the house and visitors always admire it and make nice comments and when you think about it a Range Rover is very much like a stately home on wheels. Look at my thread I have just posted to see how much money you can throw at a Range Rover.

Oh my friend I feel your pain. You too introduce humour into your posts to mask the pain inside.

Here, have my shoulder to cry on and I'm sure I'll be on with a new post soon asking to have the favour returned from you :)

My knocking noise, which sounded terminal, was my water pump and i diagnosed it using an electronic stethoscope, different engine but probably similar water pump. you never know your luck ...

Had one of them fitted a few months before as it was leaking, cheers for reminding me about that expence I had forgot about that one amongst the list of bits bought, lol

I am avoiding ever going though my receipts box, well more of a chest than a box really

the block is not toast unless there's damage to the block

Have her knickers off and have a good rummage ! That'll set her straight.

Hi I am new to this site I have an RR td6 that has just come back from the garage.
It was making a bad knocking sound that was getting worse over e few days it sounded like it was a cam follower or maybe a water pump.
To cut a long story short the knocking was found to be coming from the crank shaft pulley both the belts go around the pulley and it is all mounted in rubber, mine had split into two halves so the pulleys were just crashing against each other.
It's 4 bolts to take off and check so worth a look I believe the technical name for the pulley is a vibration damper.
The bad news is if it is this, that needs replacing its £400 but cheaper than an engine.
I will try and get a picture and post it for you

Welcome to LandyZone. Next time, don't let a knocking sound, or a squealing sound, or a humming sound, or a crackling sound, or a thunking sound, or no sound at all, go for days

Normally I would not it started on a Friday and was taken strait to the dealer they sent me away until the following Tuesday they did not seem to bothered.
The work was done under their warranty, here are some pics of the pulley

Lucky you could drive away from the dealers, when my friends v/ damper went , the vibration was so bad it was un-driveable.:)

Not an engine expert but surely if it is the little ends either new piston and con rod or even new con rods will be available as these engines are used in loads of vehicles so for me to say it's a new engine I would be after a second opinion from an engine specialist particularly a BMW one before I spent any more money .

I would imagine it's because it's probably a load of labour to strip and rebuild one of those being a V8 and parts alone would probably be more than a second hand engine where as at least the labour cost of simply taking one out and dropping a 'new' one in is more viable.

I have a few friends who run their own garages and unless you are a specialist engine rebuilder they would rather spend all day servicing and changing all the easy bolt on stuff than hours stripping down and rebuilding an engine which is most likely going to take a load of specialist tools as well.

If it was possible to DIY that would be my route as I am sure mine will let go at some point and i would rather rebuild it myself if it wasn't terminal than gamble on a second hand engine so at least i know i 'shouldn't' be going through the same process again.
