Anyone know of any problems with these, or any reason one should not buy
this 4X4. I am looking at the 2.9 Diesel. Any comments please.

The only problem I can see is that it's a Hyundai ;-)
But don't take my word for it, somebody will be along shortly with some
proper advice :)

A NZ 4x4 mag did a test drive, 4/10 result.
Crappy fuel economy, poor offroad performance and rolls like a barge when
cornering onroad.

If I were you I'd get something else. It's only apparent good point is cargo
capacity, and there are plenty out there that can beat it for capacity

4/10 is NOT general consensus of opinion!

It is hardly modern or sophisticated - but if you can live with that you
will struggle to find anything of that size and ability for a similar
price - not to mention 5 year warranty.

If you drive it and like it and it meets your needs don't let anyone put you
off.

If you fancy something more modern, better equipped and with awards flying
at it from many directions look at the Kia Sorento - similar price, but a
touch smaller (in some respects) and "only" 3 years warranty.

There is absolutely no need to pay the prices being asked by european and
japanese brands. Hyundai/Kia are producing some genuinely capable and well
built machines at very good prices. The Sorento has just won 4x4 magazine
"4x4 of the Year" award - beating some very stiff opposition in the form of
new models from Volvo, VW and others.

The three min expenses of any Hyundai are

Servicing,, and Servicing

Take a GOOD look at the service costs (best to sit down first)

Hyundai don't have 'fixed menu' prices - their dealers set the prices. since
those dealers are apparently operating a cartel, you pay through the nose

I can't remember the exact figures - but it's something like £280 for the
first one 10,000(oil & filter, fuel filter and possibly a pollen filter if
the dealer id feeling honest on the day - no air filter for the first
service)

The second service (same as the first but with an air filter) will set you
back about £320 (expensive air filter, obviously)

The 30,000 service is back to £280 (although, as Hyundai service prices seem
to increase by at least 10% every few months, you'll be paying way above
that by the time you take the car in)

40,00 will see you shelling out another £320 (plus increase) and the 40,000
will remove over £600 from your wallet.

Hyundai UK are aware of the anomaly - good value cars, ruined by greedy
dealerships - and keep promising to set up a fixed price service schedule,
with prices set by themselves.

Hasn't happened yet - and, since all their dealers are independent
businesses, I don't think it ever will - what's more, they've got you by the
proverbial's because of the 5 year warranty

Reliability will be excellent, finish will be more than acceptable - just a
shame about those service costs - and, as others have pointed out, the
depreciation will take your breath away.

So you pay twice for the 40k service ;-)

These prices are nothing compared to Subaru, basic oil and water service cost
£600.

And very amusing compared to Ford, where the service on a Maverick or
Explorer costs £100 except for the 60,000 mile service which costs £300.
So let me see, buy some unreliable **** pile of crap with a Hyundai
badge on it so the neighbours will laugh or a Maverickor Explorer which
will be virtually invisible because they are Fords and which are
actually more capacious and better built than a Hundy for less money.

Gosh it's a difficult one isn't it?

I guess you get what you pay for, I would not trust a typical Ford dealer with
anything more mechanically complicated then a paper clip.

The Ford 'service' for my Explorer cost £95. For this they "inspect" spark
plugs, air filter, coolant, etc and change if necessary. And if they change
'em it's chargeable on top of the £95 basic charge. So, for £95 they 'have a
look at it' and not much else. Can't remember if an oil change is included
or not.

But if you go to an independent for servicing theoir prices are
determined by the Ford dealer prices. Do you believe that anyone who
works on Ford cars is not be trusted?

Actually, Hyundai's are very far from being 'crap' The engineering is very
good, the paint finishes compare favourably with all other mass produced
cars, and reliability is above average. It's just a shame about the
dealers.

They've got no 'image', of course, and the Landover mob will sneer at
anything that doesn't come from Solihull - despite the woeful unreliability
of the Discovery.

I don't claim to know much about 'traditional' Landover's -except that, to
me, the fun of owning one seems to lie more in repairing them than driving
them.

If you enjoy spending weekends covered in oil and grease, stripping down
your Landover (presumably so you can go out and break it again next weekend)
then it's a free country, and good luck to those who do it.

I wanted a reliable vehicle, not a hobby - so I bought what the oily one's
sneeringly call 'Jap Crap'

I know what nationality the Hyundai motor company is - I never said that I
bought one.

I never said you did. However I did wish to highlight that you were
saying one thing and doing another.

The only vehicle I have serviced by a garage is my main road car, high annual
milage and under warranty, so it goes to the main dealer.

Yes I could take it to a independent, however the grief trying a warranty claim
in the event of failure is not worth the hassle, fortunately I have found a good
reliable main dealer so I am happy.

I never found a good Ford or Vauxhall dealer and believe me I've tried a few
over the years.
