Hydraulic winch (PTO)

I like the idea of a massive mechanical winch between the chassis rails at the rear something with a serious length of cable for serious recovery. Will keep an eye out for a tractor mechanical winch or maybe convert my Ramsey to a mechanical drive instead of electric

fitting a massive winch is a bit of a waste of time , the standardish hydraulic winch is more than capable of handling winching requirements , for self recovery . If you want to winch other vehicles the problem becomes holding your vehicle position , eg getting a bogged hilux ute out of a saltpan required my 110 having to be anchored by a l/crusr and nissan patrol. We have done several recoverys where a massive length of wire would have made the. Situation a lot easier. Usually there is a somewhere to anchor to or indeed a military anchor and touching against a large tree or big rock has always been good up to now.

I would just like a large spool and the idea of it being completely mechanical I like alot

If you are going to have a lot of cable then you need to think about a laying gear setup , I have used sidewinding 20tonn line pull winch with 250 feet of cable and needed either a landrover to pull it out or power out (slow) and had laying gear to stop it getting tangled and the other serious problem crushed if not laid correctly .
