went to start the beast after getting home this evening - turned the key and nothing- no lights on dash, no noise, nothing. switched off and tried again and started straight off, normal noise etc etc but the yellow engine warning light came on- read manual that said engine fault and take it to garage urgently. switched it off and tried it again and same thing

drove to pick up daughter from kfc , had to park came to switch back on- 15 mins with engine off - beast fired up first time and now no warning light.

so questions.......

can i just ignore it and pretend it didnt happen and did the magic kentucky fried chicken fairies fix the fault ?

if i do need to take it in - how urgent is urgent ?

am i going to make anything worse if i drive it to and fro work whilst waiting for space in garage ?

answers much appreciated :)

sometimes if you have poor battery connection the surge needed for starting can break it yet try again it will go ,the loss of electric power will register in ecu putting warning lamp on ,ecu reads voltage and resistance to work so low power gives precieved fault ,check oil water etc if okay and oil pressure goes out when starting,if it stays off dont worry

If it's running i wouldn't worry too much, the warning light usually means something might have hiccupped and like has been said, to be safe, LR insist you get it looked at so a warning light appears.

Keep an eye on it for a few days and see if the issue returns, do you have any warranty etc on the vehicle? If so, take it in, if not i'd be inclined to sit and wait to see if it comes back.

new development this morning.

two orange lights come on when you turn ignition- wait for them to warm up as normal , they go out as normal, further turn of key and ......nothing

repeat process and exactly the same ( heart in mouth trying to work out how Im going to get all kids to school and me to work with no beast :()

third time and then starts like a dream and no warning light this time .

again question....... if it was the battery would the two orange lights come on in the dash or would everything be "dead" ?

what do I do now ? Garage job ?

End of work today -same problem- all dash lights working and radio and interior light before turned ignition key fully- then same - turn and nothing - silence- .restarted process and same, third time started like a dream.

plan to ring garage tomorrow but really could do with some clues as to what it might be and an idea of cost- (still in same paypacket as Christmas and holiday break abroad - fear beast repair may make me cry :()

LZ has been a bit like the Marie Celeste when it comes to advice on this matter- ( apart from the two who replied - thank you ) where is everyone

sounds like a bad battery cable connection or the earth strap from engine or starter motor connection to me

can you hear a click when you turn key and wont start as solenoid often play up can get new from ebay for a £10 i presume yours is td5 ,could be immobilser fault ,faulty ignition switch

It is a td5

There is a click when you turn the key but no noise from the engine.

If it was a battery connection wouldnt the radio and internal light not work as soon as you turn key to first position ?- it does when I do it

What's a solenoid ? and how much would you expect a garage to supply and fit ? -( afraid if I got one from ebay it'd be a £10 bargin that'd stay in the box )

Now just to confuse matters - back from supermarket and beast started both times straight off so very confused

It's a 10 second fix but you gotta get yer hands dirty. You need to wiggle the little wire on your starter motor to help make a clean connection. It'll then be fine.;)

:hysterically_laughi

10 seconds- bless your deluded cotton socks- takes ten mins to open the bonnet :D

anyone got a pic of under the bonnet and a big arrow pointing to what a starter motor is - if thats provided- I can wiggle away with the best of them :D

td5 starter have solenoid thats wears and becomes intermittent, with car on ramp solenoid can be removed with starter still on engine 3 x screw 8mm head and kit installed buy one and get local garage to fit ,some people will sell you £150 starter but not necessary very common fault , will slowly get worse .theres 2 x contact that get burnt away when you turn key to start they are not allways making good enough contact to carry starting current to starter , put discovery starter kit on ebay £9.95 and let me know what you find

red white 6mm dia cable is usually starter solonoid colour codes unless the td5 is different worth pulling off starter cleaning and replacing failing that ask mechanic to check the starter solonoid cable connection.

It's on the driver side of the engine and just forward of the bell housing. (I get a feeling I may be wasting my time with the description cos you is a woman). I'll see if I can find a piccy for ya if yer in a bit.

It's unlikely it's needs the repair kit as the solenoid usually clicks/clunks when it does.
