Hi all. I know this has been covered countless times before but I need some clarification due to other contradicting answers! My poor ol' 110 '89 has developed a leak of the week from both rear hubs, the leak is on the outside of the wheel, brake drum is unaffected. I've checked the axle breather and banjo bolt and both are clear, from what I've read this leaves the the rubber hub cap and a paper-type gasket as potential weaknesses? Is this right? I'd assumed it would be a seal, but according to other posts this would result in oil inside the drum. I'm a bit stuck. Has anyone cured a leak by just replacing the rubber hub cap and/or gasket? Can a failed hub seal lead to a leak on the outside of the wheel only?
Any advice much appreciated!
Cheers! Sean.

yes your right if it was a 300 tdi you would need to check seal in rear of stub axle that stops oil entering hub ,but earlier allow oil to reach outer splines

Have gone over to using series steel ones fitted with a smear of silicon on my 90, will take a bit of a bump and even if knocked off if found will likely be useable again which plastic ones never are.

Update:- fitted new drive member gaskets and original hub caps and the wheels have never looked so clean! For those of you with leaky axles ( on the outside of the hub/wheel ) try axle breather first then changing gasket and hub before changing seals etc. ( this is true for early 200 axles [front disc/rear drum] with outside of wheel leaks ). If you do need to do this, get yourself a proper set of circlip pliers ( strong with wide opening ), would have made the job easier!
Ta muchly.

Iv got the same issue the rim on the outside is getting oil splash but inside looks ok....what do you think I should order? I don’t want to strip it down just to see...then build it back to use it for work till the parts come

yes i replaced both, but i used my own gasket paper and i brought genuine rubber hub caps (britpart ones lasted only a few months) and the leak was sorted.

Have you got drums or discs on the back?

No need to start a new post...I used the search bar and thought I’d just jump on it...seeing I have the same symptoms :) ....can be a dangerous game this day in age starting a new post without searching lol

Chances are the rubber hub caps are perished. Order new ones and see if they help, part number FRC4377, get genuine ones as they’re not that expensive. Put them in hot water before fitting, as they go nice and soft then.
