How you came to own a RR

My woman knows that my P38 and her P45 are closely related if she decides to kick off,as long as I don't spend more time servicing my toys than I do servicing her she remains quite well balanced.
I picked up a 99 DSE last month for £2700,120k in above average/clean condition all round,2000 miles later it remains fault free other than a intermittent hydraulic lifter sound,I'm just psyching myself up to rebuild the head before the summer's gone.
Your P38 is CAP black book priced at £4975 in good/clean condition and £4425 in average condition so I'd say you've done well but then I guess you don't need me to tell you that, congratulations on your purchase.

Yup, very pleased. Having been driving it for a couple of days now I need a new set of discs or a bearing on the front, but the local mechanic says not too serious. He has the same car, so I hope he's right!

I'll give it a good clean at some point and post a pic.

I was planning to buy something as a second car for the winter, but have paid nearly double what I planned. The daily driver is an X5, so either that or the war departments car will have to go.

Again, something she is not aware of yet.....

ok, I have a problem

I came clean today to the war department that I had actually bought the car. Might not have given the complete picture on price, but that is neither here nor there.

Told her to drive it, and said if push came to shove, I would get rid of the X5 and bimble about in in the new chuckle bus for a couple of years. After all, it would save us money in the long run if we weren't making car payment on the BMTrouble U.

What I wasn't expecting was her to come back and say she preferred the RR to her Zafira and why should I get to drive it on a daily basis. She want's it. Apparently, she works with horses so needs it more than office boy here.

Bugger.

2 questions.

1) Does anyone want to buy an 06 Zafira..

2) Anyone got a P38 2.5 DHSE for sale as I am not sure how much of the one I just bought I am going to get to see.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, and to the delights of owning a P38.

Mine is possibly a quite funny story.

I live in the country and have just rented an office space on the farm. The war departments car needed changing and I wanted something a little different to go and play in and use in the winter season. The other night I got a little tipsy and went on eBay looking at Land Rovers. I saw a 98 110, and thought it was still going quite cheaply. Being a first class idiot I thought, I wonder how high the current highest bidder has gone. I'll put in a few bids. A bit of a game of ebay Chicken. How high can I go before I stop bidding.

First bid...outbid.

Second Bid....outbid.

Third bid I went large. Now leading. 2 days later I was still leading.

Luckily this afternoon I was outbid. It is still cheap with 24 hours left to go so someone may get a bargain.

I stopped in at the local RR dealer with a friend who needed a couple of parts for his mkIII RR, and was telling the sales manager about my close call. Not to worry, he said, I took just the thing in part exchange this morning. You can have it for what I paid plus a days shooting, so I don't have to clean it or put it to auction or out through the network.

Went out for Ink for the printer and came back with a P38 2.5 DHSE with 117000m on a 51 plate.

Now all I have to do is tell the wife.
welcome to the world of p38,here you will find what is wrong, how to fix,and preventative maintenance, mine is also a 2.5 diesel, made it more reliable by using it less often lol.
i bought mine a year ago now,and to date i have spent 800 pounds on it and done 2000 miles in that time.
but i would not be without it.

Poses another question which I will start a new thread for. Preventative maintenance.

i came to own my p38 after watching wheeler dealers. i now wished id neaver watched that program iv had my p38 for 2 months now and it hasnt moved off my drive more than three times.

i was randomly browsing autotrader one day with no intention of buying a car. Looked at the RR's and didn't realise how much in price the L322's had come down. Thought it would be rude not to own an RR for under 10k. :)

.......big mistake that was though lol

About 14 yrs ago I had a old Series II with a V8 in it. Bought it off a mate for £1500. Loved it! Getting my hands dirty - new gearbox, new seats, cab tops, soft tops, new exhaust etc etc - so easy to work on. Then it broke and I couldn't really afford to repair it and wasn't really using it as I was always flying off here and there for work, so it went. Since then I've hankered after another one.

Then, a couple of months ago, chatting with the misses I said I wanted to buy a car that was my own - fed up with the fact that every time we go out in my car - the company car- I felt that I was at work. "I really fancy a landy again"

So I started looking, not with any real intent, at Defenders etc, thinking "she won't get in that, or that or that" etc etc. Anyway stumbled across the fact that RR's and Disco's were so cheap and thought "she'd get in that". (BTW Gaylanders were out - no chance!)

When my missus found out she went ballistic, "These "Pretentious", "Poncey" cars go completely against my views on being green blah blah. The environment this, the environment that." God! Did I get it in the ear!!!

Finally got the go-ahead after some things were pointed out, i.e. "Why don't you get a hobbie?" Was one, to which I replied "That's what this is dear!"

Looked at a few, some good, some bad, some awful. Took a mate with me to a few and finally found one that we felt comfortable would be a good one. A P38 1995 4.6 HSE, FSH, and only 46K on the clock. Paid £2K for it, so far, so good. Some things I've fixed, others I'm happy to put up with cos they're not urgent.

My main costs have been in buying stands, trolley jacks etc, 'cos I'd got rid of mine when I got the company car, 10 years ago.

Absolutely love the thing, and if it breaks down and is too costly to repair, I'll just buy another.

£2K well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention, my misses now loves it too - lovely comfy seats and she can see into peoples gardens easier!!!

:D:D:D:D:D

Steve.

P.S. I've got the Wheelers Dealers P38 episode saved on my Sky. I watch it when there's nothing else on - makes me grin every time "I've got one of those." :D:D
