OR disconect the batter for a few seconds..........

i had exactly the same fault, went to mute when pressing steering wheel buttons, main dealer told me the cure was to buy new buttons nothing else will do it,
complete BO**OCKS,
disconect the battery for a few seconds and then dont use steering wheel buttons till it fixed.
i got the whole lot (4xbuttons) on flopy circuit for £43 inc vat and fitted it in 15 mins...

I'll go along with that Redrange, it's the same as pulling the fuse.
I found that it only happened to me (Several times) when I used the Mode button.
Now I just forget it's there and only use the volume up/down switches.

you can change them very easily and there not stupid money, mine now press easily with a nice click, had to press them with an old coin before, very hard to do, made driving it so much nicer.
they may be riveted in place, just drill them out and use self tappers, make sure there not too long or the first time you press the horn it wont stop!!!
i didnt unplug airbag, just placed it on the dash, gentley!!
