Hi guys!
I have search it in the forum and don't find anything.
Can anyone explain me how to know what serie is my freelander?

I have a FR 1 year 2000, diesel and with AC, but I don't know if the motor its serie K or L or whatever... :(

Any help is welcome!
Thanks

The only diesel engine fitted in year 2000 was an L series.
Petrol 1.8 is a K4.
Petrol 2.5 is a Kv6.

Later, around 2001 onwards the diesel was changed to the BMW TD4 engine.

Sad, but I just know!!

Just checked in good book, Freelander Complete Story.

It also says... L Series is 4 cyl, single overhead cam, direct injection. Cam is belt driven. Power is 97Ps at 4200rpm.

The actual differences are difficult to determine by registration letter or year, as some up to 2000 and 2001 onwards were cross sold over different registration letters.

The easiest way to tell as by the front indicator colour. If the front indicators are orange, then it's a pre 2001 model, so would have the 2.0 L series diesel and manual 5 speed PG1 gearbox, or 1.8 K series petrol engine, again with the PG1 5 speed gearbox.

If the front indicators are clear, then it's a 2001 onwards model.

There were extensive differences made to the post 2001 models, the largest being the replacement of the L series diesel with the BMW sourced TD4 2.0 diesel engine, fitted with a Getrag 5 speed manual gearbox, or optional 5 speed Jatco automatic. The KV6 was introduced at the same time, supplied with the Jatco 5 speed automatic.

There were loads of other changes made to the body, suspension, steering, and safety systems, as well as more electronic integration such as ABS/TC/HDC becoming standard equipment and cruise control being optional on the automatic models. Things like the heated front screen and power fold mirrors become optional, or standard depending on specification.

2000 was the change over year, my understanding is that there are more 2000 TD4s than L Series.

Indicators is the usual way of checking 'quickly' - but a lamp unit burnt out on my '99 and has been replaces with a clear glass MY01 unit - so not its not completely accurate, just like whether the wing mirrors have a vertically ribbed piece between the door and mirror housing.

You can go by the VIN number, but as @hd3 says - its easiest just to lift the bonnet and look at it! That L Series pic though has the big plastic acoustic cover removed - normally you'd lift the bonnet and be looking at a sheet of black plastic. The dip stick is broken on that L Series pic as well - the TD4 has that loop to put your finger through, the L Series should have a round flat end to it. The oil filler cap is obvious though, I presume that square cap is the oil filler on the TD4, the L Series has that round 'notched' cap which will either be visible without the acoustic cover, or under a flap on the cover if its there.

Thanks you so much guys!
Today i will check with the photos, I think it will be the better way.
The thread can be clossed to mark it as "resolved"?
