I wanted to install 2 seats of bench seats in the back of my defender 90 my insurance basically told me if I install them myself they will not cover me (I tried with/without seat belts). They also asked my how many seats my vehicle has, I refused to answer on the basis that my vehicle actually has 2 front seats and that's it. I know it had a middle seat before I bought it (the seat belt is still there).

When i bought the vehicle it had two worn bench seats in the back, how do I know if these were original? As in fitted from the factory? My V5 gives no indication as the number of seats bit is blank, and I just rang the DVLA to see if they had any more information and they said they don't. So how do i find out the original number of seats?

To add to this, I've justed checked my insurance documents and it says it is a "Manual Light Van" with "Up to 8 seats" I didnt input the number of seats when taking out insurance.

Factory fitted seats in Station Wagons had a substantial tubular frame that the seat belts fitted on to.
If it had factory fitted rear seats I would expect the model type on the V5 to reflect it, i.e. CSW, or the DVLA description to say Estate.

If you “decode” your VIN, you will find the model on there. That should give you an idea of how many seats the model had.

It depend son the age of the vehicle to if the tubular bar was fitted. Series vehicles never had it and nor did the early 90/110 defenders. I want to say they came in with the 300tdi, but I have nothing to back this up so would need some more research.

I had a 96, P reg 300tdi 90 County as a work vehicle a few years back.
I took out one of the rear seats to make more room for the dog, the seat was bolted in with 4 M8's.
There was no tubular bar fitted, lap belts were attached to the seat hinges.

How old is the car? If it was after the requirement for EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval (mid 1990s) there should be an "EU Certificate of Conformity" available for it. Landrover should be able to give you one if you give them your VIN, but they might charge for it.
