mine is like that.. thought it was play between the gearbox and transfer box..? mine does it with it in gear..

Looks very similar to my 2000 td5 pickup, i also get the "clonk" when changing gear unless i take care with the clutch pedal and a similar sounding rattle/clonk when i turn the engine off. Although the sound when turning off the engine doesn't happen if i keep my foot on the clutch! I'm thinking of getting underneath this weekend and having a look at the front diff flange and seal as i can see a bit of oil weeping from here. It's a job that needs doing for the leak on it's own and maybe a worn flange could be a major contributor to the clonk. I'm thinking it could well be just minor wear on a number of components that are adding the problems i'm having so i might just have to live with it for the time being.

Your other question about the handbrake, if it rolls 4inches it probably means there is high and lows on the drum/shoes, so it will hold at high points. Turn the adjuster (square head on passenger side) on back of the handbrake plate one turn 90° clockwise and see if that sorts it. Also, after how many click does your handbrake engage? If it takes a fair few, then adjust the cable so it's pulling sooner by moving the cable end union further away from the handbrake bracket.

Also, it's a good idea to clean the handbrake up occasionaly, while driving along, press the button in and gently pull the handbrake on till you can hear it make contact and just enough you can feel it retard the motion of the vehicle a LITTE, pull it on and off gently like this a few times to clean up the surfaces.

Fitted new clutch to mine yesterday now changes gear lovely and strangely changes gear much nicer/smoother now

about the same amount of rotation as mine, and I get a hell of a clunk that sounds like it's down there. Check out your drive flanges/half shafts before thinking about the diff/gear washers etc (I need to do that too hehe, maybe this weekend!)

I get a fair clunk taking up drive in reverse unless I'm very careful with the clutch - reckon that's also down to a fairly worn clutch though. Same clunk pulling off in first unless again very careful with clutch, though it tends to pull away smoother coming from reverse to first while still rolling back slightly, then pulling away.

Never get a clunk when moving down through gears using engine braking. Only when moving up through gears, though careful clutch and throttle control normally achieves a smooth clunk-free change. It's worst when I have to get out of a junction sharpish and have to get through the gears quick to get up to speed - she doesn't like that one bit. :(
