How much oil to use in a rear diff ??

Hi guys ,

a stupid question i know because under normal circumstances you would fill it until it comes out of the fill hole

However!!!!

I entrusted somebody who was a welder and not much else between the ears to replace my rear diff pan which he did, but the wrong way as pictured below in the attachment

any way i thought if i lift the rear end of the disco right up in the air,and managed to get the right amount of oil in it, it would not matter where the fill hole was located

think i heard somewhere this wekend its 2.5 ltrs ;)

shame i did'nt practice what i preach :D (in me defence been very busy and too wet to get under there too much)
did'nt help that the dick that fitted the rear hub oil seals in me back axle put um in ass about face :mad: (not me i bought the 2 axles couple of years back )
 
Thanks for the response guys but there is a bit of difference from 2.5 litres to 1.7 litres if anybody can point me to a web site that gives the right info.

Or if any body has a 300tdi and fancies changing there rear diff oil and letting me know how much you use

no rush its not dark yet lol

you could always change the oil in yer front diff that would give you a clue ;) they are both the same ;)

It is 1.7lts, I have a leaking rear diff pan:doh: (no funds to weld new pan as yet) and have drained and measured what goes back in.
 
cheers fellas i will try to get al least 1.7 liters in

I think because i bought the heavy duty pan it is slighly deeper than the one that came of maybe i'm not sure the pillock welder ground it of and binned it

Surely the welder can't be dumb enough to weld over the original pan? In which case you'll need slightly more than 1.7lt to compensate for the gap between the two pans?
