How much oil does a TD4 take?

This one comes up all the time with capacities varying from the official 6.8L right down to 5L. I have always maintained that the engine should take over 6L and that if you aren't using that much then you can't be draining all the old oil out. I gave my wife's TD4 its 6-monthly oil & filter change today (using Castrol Edge as usual) and this is what I found.

Just to clarify the situation this includes the oil-filter. When checking the dipstick level the vehicle was perfectly level and the dipstick pushed fully home. All measurements were made using a 1L jug with lines at every 50mL so there is no guessing, 'about' or 'near enough' in it. Both the old oil and the new oil were accurately measured. After a 'certain' amount of oil was put in the engine it was run and then allowed to stand for a few minutes, this was repeated and small (measured) amounts added until the dipstick level was spot on. The level was also spot on before the old oil was drained out. Engine was warm as it had been for a run earlier this morning plus it is a very warm day. For draining the vehicle was run up on ramps so it was sitting nose up and the maximum amount of oil could be drained out of the sump. It was left to drain for nearly 2-hours while I mowed the lawns (well, you have to keep busy don't you?).

The amounts? 6.8L drained out and 6.8L to re-fill it.:)

What did I notice that might explain the different amounts people quote?
Firstly the oil was warm, I drain it with the nose up and it is left it to drain for a long time. Does everyone allow for ALL the old oil to be drained? Even though it had been draining for over 30-mins and there was barely a drip out of the sump-plug (well, the Difflock Drainplug hose actually), the moment I released the oil-filter housing there was a gush of oil (I wish I had measured it). If people are re-fitting the sump-plug before changing the filter this will make a difference.

I would love someone else to do an equally accurate oil-change and publish their results or have you all got a life?

I didn't accurately measure the amount of oil I put on when doing an oil change recently but had the 6.8 litre figure in mind from the manual - I would say thats what went in judging by the calibrations on the side of the oil cans used to fill.

WOW I've never done a car with as much oil before. Is it because it has a turbo or something? I've also never had a turbo car. Stumbled on this thread after a quick search.

WOW indeed - You have been up late looking at old threads.

You must be really keen and enthusiastic - good on ya. ;)

There is no particular reason for the extra oil.

If you check the capacity for the other vehicles that use the same M47 engine in it's various levels of tune (Rover 75, MGZT, BMW 320, BMW 520) you get all sorts of answers.

It's all down to the shape and size of the sump which varied between models. They are all different - at least 4 or 5 different.

The reason for the confusion originally mentioned by Litch is because those clever scribes making up the oil company charts and data books must have taken their info from the BMW engine info site rather than from the vehicle manufacturer handbooks.

Of course when the decision was made to put a BM engine in the Freelander instead of it's original Rover made diesel - the whole shebang was owned by BMW.

Enough history.

So the correct capacity is 6.8 litres.

My method of checking was very simple - drain the oil, change the filter and then see how much to get the dip-stick spot on. It's 6.8 Litres. :D

It can take a while for the oil to settle in the sump.

I always check the level from cold rather than during a journey - even if I wait for 10 minutes I always get the level reading between the marks. After standing overnight all the oil has ran down into the sump and the level reads correct.

Beware adding a last half litre that may not really be needed.

You'll find several posts about over-filled engines.

SV, yeah I have to say though I only got to page 68 the other week checking out old threads on the freelander section. I just typed in google last night and it brought me to the forum. I have done a lot of reading. I like to try and do things myself to help with costs so it usually involves me learning as much as I can. Would you believe I don't even have the car yet? Annoying me as I want to start playing. It's not the garages fault though its mine. I'm still waiting for somebody to pay me what they owe me.

That and I can only get at weekends as its a bit of a distance and I'm currently snowed in with workload...

Our two TD4s take exactly 6 litres for an oil & filter change. Using either drain plug removal or sucking the oil out via the dipstick makes no difference. Been doing it for 8 years now.

Where does the figure 6.8 come from?? The manual I read says 4.8!!!

Thanks! Checked in my Haynes manual and it says 6.8 , think the version if owners manual I have doesn't cover td4 :( does any one know if there is one for td4 on rave?
