How much fuel....

As I've said before, I'm new to the land rover community! I bought a 1986 90 Defender a couple of weeks ago. The guy before me said that the fuel tank is aftermarket. I've tried texting/calling him to ask this but he won't answer..
I don't know how much fuel it holds... I did recall him saying it was a smaller tank than the original. I can take a photo of it to show you how its set up. You can reach into the tank if needed. Do I fill it to the top? :/

you could go to a fuel pump and fill it up then look at the machine and read how many liters it took

How can it possibly be any smaller than the original tank? The original only held 45 litres which is pitiful

In a regular fuel tank the fuel pump would stop automatically when the tank is full. The way this one is set up is completely different. I don't think the pump would stop.

that openings big enought to see when yer getting to the top, but less than 45L, what is it, an offroad only motor, standard tank is good for less than 250 miles...

Never seen anything like that before that's a strange one. I can only assume its been changed to make it a larger tank

bet thats a pain in the arse to fill up being there! just fill it up your soon know if you shouldnt have

bit dodgy looking to me looks like its come of a old heating system

yeah it was for off-roading. I put 25 liters in. Yeah its a little pain to get to. But eventually I'll put the regular tank in. Thanks guys.

Nah me old TD 90 held 48ltrs approx.

Don't see the problem with the OP's tank?? Once the pump nozzle is below the level of the fuel it auto stops. So not possible to over fill.

That's why the gauge goes down so quick then

Old ones held around 45 litres with the side mounted tank. Later ones I.e TD5 held about 60

That's not bad then , I get 230 to 250 miles before the light comes on just knocking about and towing etc..

Older-type (under seat) tank holds 52 litres from empty.

Em no it doesn't. I wish mine did, that extra 7 litres might get me a little bit further but I can assure you that anything above 45 is really pushing it

I've just put 70 litres in mine, hope that helps

If your motor isn't or wasnt road legal then a fuel tank behind the seats would suggest it was to stop it getting bashed in competition or doing extreme off road.

It probably has a swirl pot also so it picks up the fuel when at extreme angles.

If its alloy and in good nic get it sold to cover the cost of putting the original back in. There is a good market for them with the challenge boys. Try Devon4x4 forum.
