How many miles does your 90 do on a tank?

On a good run I will get 300+ before the light comes on. Have had 350 out of it fairly often on motorway drives.

A lot less (260 to light) when towing. General driving in less fuel efficient conditions will see 280-290 to the fuel light.

TD5 (2002) with 109k gets to amber light at 285 miles - regular as clockwork. 43 litres to refill.

I tried bending my sender down and now my sender move between half and 1/4 and thats all it moves lol...

So looks like I should be getting a fair few more miles than I am. Though I don't like to run to empty often.

Wonder how much a new sender would be? Edit: £32 for an OE one, worth a shot maybe?

There are very useful phone apps to calculate mileage. I have used one for the past 3 years and it negates the scratching of heads, biting of pencils and punching in keys on calculators

Same here, I did a round trip of 230 miles (A1 and country roads) at Christmas, still had approx 1/4 tank left when I got home And I didn't drive economically

Hahah!! I have the window down at one point and thought it sounded pretty throaty

Maybe I should not have have gone from a tuned Cooper S with a sports exhaust kit to a defender

I do drive it calmly usually but it was christmas and I needed to get back to see of Santa had been

That is exactly how I would work it out, a far better method than running out of fuel and sucking loads of **** into the fuel system!

I get about 30mpg out off the 90 just knocking around locally, would be down towards 20 cruising at 65 plus for any distance. Really encouraging to hear that the modern engines are not much better.

I think there's a lot of myth out there regarding the modern tdci's. Most of the adverse comments are from people who don't own one and relate from their experiences from transits (which I reckon are pretty good too). In my opinion they are a great engine, good design and have chain driven cams :clap2:. Being by nature a petrol head and swore never to buy a diesel with my own money, driving the defender has changed my outlook. As regards fuel consumption my 27 - 29 mpg is with boot to the floor. One journey last year from Kent to Scotland including 90mph blasts on the long uphill M6 section past the lakes, same sort of mpg.

. With a lighter foot on the pedal reckon it would get 30++mpg but that kinda driving is no fun.

But it certainly isn't going to be doing 90 mph

I certainly agree about the chain driven cams, I always hated cambelts

Going slow is great fun

I love watching the queues of emmets behind me turn blue as they breathe my fumes

Reckon we're all into defenders for similar reasons, can't think of any other everyday transport I'd rather have. Except (possibly) the '77 mini I once owned and sold on for peanuts, always missed that car more than any other. Might get another one day, but it would have to be as well as the landy and not instead of.

300 TDI 110 SW 1998 and I get 400 miles to the red every tank but the tank is rear mounted rather than under the seat

2005 110 TD5 double cab, gets 23-25 mpg and that's really the best it will do of mixed driving, on a motorway it might be a little better but its the basic shape of the Defender and the fact I hate driving slowly, means it will never be in to the 30+ mpg, but a range of just over 400 miles is ok.
