Just wondering if anyone has any experience on gravelly gearboxes. I have changed the oil once with mtf94 and that has made a huge difference but not to the first gear which still grates occasionally. I heard that as some of the oil is left behind, you may need to change the oil twice or more to dilute the original oil. I did my second change today and still to test it out yet. Anyone else had experience with this situation?

Guessing it's a Manual. .

Slightly different but my p38 and as far as I know all other Range Rovers gear box oil can't be changed all in one go when I did mine (auto) I drained refilled ran for a week them drained and refilled and boy what a difference! I'd say it will be better the more clean fluid that's in it.

Hope that helps.

Tested the car out and it is even smoother after the 2nd oil change. Still just a little grate occasionally when going into first gear.

Hello mate, you'll pretty-much always get a slight grating noise going from 1st to 2nd, especially when the box and it's oil are cold. When cold I find 1st to 2nd changes are best done rather slowly, then you avoid the worst of the grumbles.

This is, in part, due to previous owners using ATF instead of MTF94 and/or not doing oil changes often enough.

This gearbox is not the most smooth, but it is very durable, especially if it has regular oil changes.

Cheers

gear grating or rough feel is a baulk ring problem outer teeth wear thin , it usually starts with 2nd then 3rd as they get the hardest changes but can be others if they are just poor parts , frequent oil changes is vital for gears and bearings , if you strip enough boxes youll see using atf causes no more wear than mtf ,though a good few do find mtf a better feel

I changed the oil on my d2 td5 with smith&allen mtf 94,transformed gear changes.

Hi all. I have now done 10 miles in the car and it has improved a hell of a lot and the first oil change was wow transformational. I am thinking that the rough gearbox can be just years of neglect on my car.
