My Td5 90 has done 57000 miles.

I'm guessing it did some towing (unknown how much and what) before I got it because it had the worn syncro in 2nd.

Now it often crunches into 3rd.

Also are these symptoms of a worn mainshaft
  • Clunk when selecting 1st to move off
  • Clunks when depressing the clutch to select next gear
  • Various other random clunks.
Also when changing from 3rd to 4th, thers is no feeling at all, it almost drops in with no effort at all, yet in low range it sometimes cruches into 4th as well.

When I bought it had done 52000 and didn't seem to be so bad. Haven't towed with it, or used it off road except the odd greenlane, so how has it worn so quick????

Or am I looking in the wong place, could it be a clutch issue??

Thanks for any help

Hey I'm not too sure but I have EXACTLY the same prob with mine but I have discounted a clutch prob as I've had both cylinder changed and got all the hydrolics checked. I think it's the syncro's as when I double de'clutch it doesn't do it. BTW mine's done 46,000

Check the oil in your gearbox. They only hold between 2.8 and 3(ish) litres, and if one of the gaskets have gone you could well have lost a third of the contents of your gearbox oil! I have also been having similar problems with crunching into third, and in most cases (apparently) it is the syncromesh that buggers up.

A few thoughts.....There is a chance it could be a clutch and/or dual mass flywheel prob. ( the cover may not be releasing the plate enough) If this is the case then the gears with the better syncros will cope but the more abused syncros wont cope.
Does the clutch pedal have much travel though? Have you tried bleeding the clutch?
Also common to all land rovers if you let the clutch up quick you can get the transfer box to clunk, even new ones do this.

I get the clunk when the clutch is let up quickly, I understand this.

I don't understand why it clunks when I depress the clutch to change gear.

Also what causes the clunk when the vehicle is stationary, and I depress the clutch a select first, as I select first theres the clunk even before I've begun letting up the clutch.

It's just been serviced and new gbox and tbox oil, no leaks so level should be fine. Is there any other oil that would help, someone mentioned ATF oil.

Lastly, is any damage caused by the crunching into gears? I'm not so bothered about the crunching as I reckon it's just worn syncros, but the clonking is puzzling me a bit!!!

Thanks for the advice so far

The clunk of selecting first when the clutch pedal is pressed seems to suggest the clutch isnt fully disengaging. Have you tried bleeding the clutch? I would seriously try it.
Crunching the gears is not good! It will wear out the syncro rings and at worst damage or wear the teeth on the gears.
