Hi,

Recently I've had to replace my diff mounts again, I noticed I need a diff seal as there has been oil leaking. I just topped up the diff with oil and got back under to check if any was leaking out(a small amount). How hot should the diff get? Mine was warm after a 30 minute drive, just wondering if anyone else has felt their diff?

Cheers,

Gary.

i regularly check the vcu casing / ird and diff. casings .. where the output bearing be /
with an IR thermometer .. after a straight-ish run of 5 miles @ 60/70 mph ..

vcu .. measured at the same casing spot .. drivers side .. away from the exhaust pipe ..
be constantly 10c deg above ambient air temp.
( temp rises on twisty roads )

diff casing .. where it meets the propshaft .. be roughly about 20c above ambient temps
that's an very approximate number ..
can take a reading over the next few days and note the exact deg.

that's an unladen and not towing anything vehicle
i suspect the rear diff temp. would rise if towing.

The temps that hd3 has measured are much the same as my own measurements.
VCU measures 10°C to 30°C above ambient. The rear diff measured about 20°C above ambient. These temps are pretty variable, depending on the type of surface being driven on.
The oil in the diff will keep lubricating at temps well about 100°C. So unless it's getting hotter than 100° regularly, you'll have no worries. ;)
