Hi all,

I'm currently looking at buying a Discovery 4 Commercial. I have chosen this vehicle as it seems to offer the load lugging capability that I need for my building business. How good are they and how do they differ to a normal discovery also how reliable are they? Thanks in advance!

Ru.

Hi Ru, they are fabulous vehicles, 100% reliable, 50mpg on average and can carry lots and lots of stuff.

Service intervals are every 100,000mls - whether they need it or not.

100% reliable. really? Maybe for the first few years from new but still seem to suffer all the expensive niggles that Disco 3's are famous for after this time!

But for business purpose the commercial is a LOT cheaper to own

And it simply costs less in first place

Pal of mine got one and spent a few grand converting it back to 7 seat XS spec

Had to weld about 30 nuts on the security bolts in the floor so he could bolt the seats in, land rover do NOT want you to be able to convert them!!

It's a truly fabulous machine, but towing 3.5 ton+ on a daily basis he is lucky to get 17mpg

It does better unladen but is still very thirsty.

Hi,

Many thanks for all the replies guys even the sarcy comments ;) lol. Are they really that unreliable then? I've heard people saying this and that about them but a friend of mine has a discovery 2 and he uses it on a daily basis towing fencing panels, posts etc and has never really had any major problems I think that's a 2002 reg.

They are not particularly unreliable, and getting better the newer they are.

The problem is that they really need pro-active maintenance (like all vehicles!!) not just following the LR schedule. Maintenance costs money, so it doesn't get done- hence reliability issues.

Our D4 has never missed a beat and tows every week :)

Right I see. So what is the actual difference between the 3 and the 4 then? I'm not looking to spend over 20 grand if I can help it. Also do they ever suffer major gearbox or engine problems? Repairs for it won't be too bad as I know a chap that knows a specialist. Thanks!
