Hey all,

I always get great help from the Landyzone family and I need help with this one. I have an old Land Rover 90 that spent a good deal of it life in the RAF. It is nothing special but worth the world to me. I had great plans to put a TDI, rock sliders, new axles ect into it. About 6 months ago a good opportunity to own a doner Landy came avaliable so I bought one with a few must haves bolted on. It came with a B reg V5 and the body and overall shape matched the V5. I bought it bacause it came with a nice bulkhead and 200TDI and a few other bits that I wanted to bolt to mine. I was going to sell what I didnt need along with the chassis when I was done (see my other posts). As I dig into this Landy the interior parts attached to the bulkhead and wiring harness suggest that they are from a much newer Landy. It has a sticker on the harnes that dates 2004 and it has traction control modual on the side of the brake master. I recieved paperwork from the person I bought it from stating that he spent 800 on the chassis and 500 or so on the traction control but it looks to be factory fitted. The person I bought it off of was a USAF officer and I think he had it for a bout a year and let his kid get it muddy at the local pay and play. I paid about 2500 for the Landy and I have sold some of the kit on ebay (roll cage, doors and small bits) because at the time I didnt suspect foul play. Now the more I read these forums the more I think I might have stolen property. It would totaly suck to be out 2500 but I need to know before I bolt anything to my truck. Sorry for all the words but I am at a loss. As always thank you in advance for your help.

Its probs just been in the right hands and someone has already done alot of upgrade work already.. quite often with Landys a 20 year + vehicle might aswell be brand new by the time its got there, by the amount of new stuff bolted on..

Bulkhead might be black cause its from a donor vehicle.
200tdi , cause the last engine was a TD or N/A
Heater seats, taken from newer landy and bolted in, (done this with mine, its 18yr old)
Traction control , if taken to the right place would look factory fitted, could even have a new Axle with all the brakes and job lot from a new one just bolted right on.. therefore it would look factory fitted..

I don't think ya have too much to worry about mate.. altho £2500 is a nice price for all that kit, specially if its a decent chassis and bulkhead!
if in doubt try one of them Text Reg No things they'l tell ya, otherwise ring DVLA Explain and ask them...

Good luck.

lanny man 90,

It does have a hexagon on both sides I think. I cant remember the number but i will check tonight, if it is 04 does that mean it is from a 2004. This chassis doesnt have the traditional stamp on the driver side front that has the full vin like my other Landy which is why I was confused.

Red September

Thanks for the info, the reg is clear as I have see where it has changed hands twice before me and the V5 was mailed to me without a problem. The info that I am reading talks about people taking old reg/V5s and recycle them with a stolen vehicle and pass them off as an older Land Rover when it is actuly a newer vehicle. If this is not the case for my doner then I will be happy cuz my wife already has the why do you need two Land Rovers attitude.

Thank you,
Doug

yes if its a 2004 chassis it will say something like ty04 or ft04 it will have letters an numbers but your only interested in the numbers don't worry about the letters its only what batch it came from the factory

lanny man 90,

I cheched the chassis and you were right it has two letters (HJ or JH) and 04. Is this the only marking they put on newer chassis'? If so how can you tell if it is legit, i.e. different from another 04 chassis. on my old 90 the vin stamp on the side of the chassis matches the plate on my brake housing and the plate on my seat box. Did Land Rover just not match or mate the newer chassis to a vin during production? I was at the Lotus factory and they carve the chassis number in several places, I would think Land Rover would do the same. Again, thank you for all the help. I am still concerned weather this car is legit. I will try and load pictures so you (the experts) can give me your thoughts.

Thank you
Doug

johnlad,

that is my thought/fear as well. What should I do or who shoud I call to take a look at it. If I call the local police will they be able to tell if it was stolen. I have money invested but I also dont want stolen property. I am willing to loose the money and chalk this up to a huge lesson learned but I dont know how I would go about it. Thoughts?

personaly i wouldnt bother and get it used as intended there are many landys out there with differnt bits on them some new some old . for all you know the previous owner may have bought all the bits off a legitimate landrover breaker or ebay and renwed bits on it or he could have done same as me . a total rebuild and bits sourced via landrover/ breakers / ebay etc the chassi may even have been off a breaker thats broken up an insurance write off check for numbers on the axles that may tell you something

its definitely an 04 you can go to landrover give them the reg number an chassis number an they will give you a print out of the chassis number, gearbox, axles, and engine numbers (like a birth certificate) there are also yellow stickers all over the landy( ie) behind clocks, main chassis loom, roof lining an lots of other places there is also 10 or 12 numbers on the chassis that relate to the id of chassis if you need anymore help pm me as i don't want to tell you on here where they are just in case any tea leafs are reading this as landy ringing as rife as we all know an these numbers help people get there landys back :D

You can also check the glass as all car glass is dated Depending on the Manufacturer. either as a series of dots or thru the use of letter and numbers. It is possible to date a window or screen to with a month of it's manufacture.

this is for triplex glass

In the UK, most glass on classics came from Triplex and is dated by dots above and below the letters of the logo. The year dot is below (or above) the word TOUGHENED or LAMINATED. The decade isn’t identified, so a dot on the T or L is 1951/’61/’71 etc, on the D is 1959/’69 etc and a dot after the D is 1960 etc.

Disco2shaun,

Yes, the 200TDI is a replacement and I believe it came from a disco because the trans is longer than my old 77. The engine mounts were moved forward (cut and rewelded) on the chassis to make it fit. They also cut into the seat box for the shifter. Very possible on the chassis as I knew it was a replacement but I did not get a reciept where it was purchaced. I am the third owner in 2 years and so not sure how far back these mods started. What is certian is I have parts from an early Land Rover 90, an 04 Defender and a Disco.

Redhand,

I will look at the glass tonight. I can tell you that it did not have the fold down hinges like my older landy. I have seen the newer defenders with this set up but I dont know what year they started with the non folding windscreen.

Thank you,
Doug

my 96 defender doesnt have folding hinges,i wouldnt worry about it mate, there are quite alot of defenders about with mismatched parts, doesnt neccasarily mean its stolen.

Thanks for all the info. I have a little more research to do but I will let you know what I find. Hope everyone has a safe and happy new year and I hope to meet you guys in the future.

Cheers,
Doug
