Disco 1 how do people cope :(

been a while since posting anything be it assistance or questions
currently trying to cope with the psychological knowledge that i'm desperate to get a landy, preferably a disco 1, tho a 2 would not be minded,
biggest issue is funds though I've seen a couple of projects for not a lot of monies
one with an "mot" though how it got it with the state of the rear arches inside the rear doors i'll never know
welding not an issue as can be done, money on the other hand, after being let down by "favors" for friends that supposed to be paid for, that's another story......
anyway i digress


how do people cope with not being able to get the vehicle/project they want/NEED desperately

input/support/ideas much appreciated

Ive 2 D1's for my sins, although I looked for a few months before the first showed up on egay locally & a deal was done

the first I bought this time last year with short mot for £450 but spare bits inc gear/transfer box turbo head pump & a few doors, drove it till mot due then started welding (it's a '94 3 door 200tdi so tin worm)
So a pair of front innerwings & repairs to both sides of bulkhead & I'm getting ready for the fun of sills

Jump forward till August this year & while perusing egay for (now rareish??) 200 3 door bits I spied a complete '92 D1 on auction with a day left &@ starting bid of £400 with no bids, quick read of add & it has mot till March '16 but sold as spares - repair due to leaky gearbox

A few messages later & I bid (after joining rac )
I'm taking a 250mile risk each way on it being either an mot with registration or a viable driving d1 3 door (same colour/no sunroofs etc. As my now restoration '94!)

Anyway,

Still driving said '92, admittedly after fitting the (now rebuilt) 'spare' lt77 & tbox that came with the '94 although there is a growing list of 'to-do's

Just because 1 was £450 & other was £400 it doesn't mean that's all I've spent

But it's worth every penny / burn / scraped knuckle as the / they are great workhorses & tow brilliantly with 35 mpg last tankful including a 300 mile roundtrip to Newbury autojumble

I had a 3.5i 'j' reg 5 door D1 maybe 10 - 15 years ago, was great & badly missed, maybe 30 mpg on a good day with less towing

Off roading already then.

I got mine for £800 from a dear as a trade in, a good mate welded it back together for £340, spent £200 on other bits so for me £134, I have atidy reliable rot free Disco 1
I would say you need £1500 ish to get a good one unless you have the skills of good cheap mates, mines just for weekends and winter use so the MPG isn't an issue but it soon mounts up if its your daily driver

i know where i could get 2 for £1700, one auto, needs a bit of work, bodge inside rear door arches, tho rear floor looks repaired, allthough poorly lol, good running gear .. one manual looks tidy on the surface, but certainly rear arches inside doors would not pass mot so how it got one not poke'd arround too much, so with state of inside door, guessing boot floor etc is shot, though from outside looks great, wonder if i could make 1 good one from the pair,
and as a winter car/ occasional offroad/greenlane, auto or manual to be maintained?????
on a side note welding not an issue, have welder can weld, and good friend runs a welding business

that's good cos you'll get plenty of practice

if you are going to buy one try to find something that has not had too many 'repairs' (read bodges) as re-working previous rust / weld issues is soul-destroying

mec. issues are easy, just need stuff to bolt it to

I could have what your looking for! I have been working on and off a Disco 1 for the last few years. Its sat on my drive with wife complaining about space etc.
I have done 85% of the welding, front and rear arches, sills, rear floor.
I have hammerited the chassis after cleaning, front to do.
New parts, still in boxes include Polybush kit, new HD springs in Yellow, new Shocks, new A frame fulcrum, new rear exhaust, various new bits and bobs. Its a 300tdi with 142K on clock. Regularly started. BFGs all round
Need a trailer to take away, but I only want £500! (New parts come to over £400) plus you get a Spare front axle, a haynes manual, free can of waxoil (Pump size) and a Land Rover sweat shirt! Its effectively a Free Disco!
