I have tried in vain looking every where for an answer.
My disco 2.5 tdi (M) reg has started to chuck out lots of black smoke under heavy throttle and when setting off from junctions. Its getting embarrasing looking in the mirror to see the person in the car behind wafting away.
Ive done the expected, air filter, injector cleaner, i even went to block off the EGR valve but its already been done!(at the inlet end) Does it need doing at both sides?
I have noticed that the stainles steel flexi hose is a bit damaged! Will it suck in air from there. What more can i try.

Was thinking over fueling, but dont know why! Only just had the glowplugs changed. Its down on power aswell, especially on take off. It hesitates then slowly sets off with clouds of black smoke. It seems ok when im up to speed.

Get injectors tested and if need be pressure reset and tips replaced. If this dont cure it you will need to look at the injector pump. Hope this helps BB

Thanks guys.
Does any one know of a reliable place near Blackpool that I can have the injectors and wotnot tested? The black smoke is really embarrassing!
I don’t think my usual garage is up to the job.
Just a bit fed up of throwing money at my Disco!
shims, tyres, rear suspension bushes (every 12 months), power steering, brakes, head gasket, glow plugs, fan belt every 7 months and just last week some T*%T slashed my tyres (along with 7 other cars in our village)
Damned money pit but I wouldn’t want to give her up (The Disco not the wife! I would rather keep the car!!!!!!)

from the list you have gave there the tyres wear out on any car, the h/g is one of those things that will always go on any car, the bushes must be ****e quality to need replacing every year, everything else is just routine maintenance on a car, thee is nothing in the world you can do when some young blighter decides to slash yer tyres, i hope uyer get it sorted mate ;)

I guess i was just having a moan !!
As for the bushes my garage tells me its because ive got oversized tyres !!!!First time they changed the linkages and the bushes. I took their word for it. Now it every M.O.T. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
last time they changed them £4 each bush and £90 for doing it. Serves me right for being lazy.

Its M.O.T time in two months I’m going to get some and do it myself.
I’ve just been looking at my engine because it was nice and clean after my head gasket failed, it pressurised the water header tank and split it along the seam, I thought that the cap has some kind of emergency pressure release? Anyway back to my clean engine, I’ve noticed that the area around my injectors fuel return pipes the engine is wet with diesel(I presume) is this a pressure issue with the pump / injectors? there doesn’t seem to be any clips on the pipes, is this normal?

For Injector testing. Look up your local Bosch agent in Yellow pages. Some are worth getting recon others are not depends on type. Also keep copper washers on injectors as they can be different thickness. BB

the egr valve only needs to be blocked off at the flange which supports the valve to the engine as for your black smoke problem i stripped my fuel pump cleared a load of gunk from it replaced the lift pump (40:00)and emptied the seperator cured it for me now i get white smoke when cold any suggestions

Ive had the injectors checked, they were fine, they told me they had "turned the fuel down" must have ment the pressure? No black smoke now, but it is a little under power now, if i really give it some down a slip road onto the motorway i can get it to 50 mph just as i join the first lane. . . that cant be right? Once im up to speed 70mph on the motorway everything is fine. Normal driving around town is fine. I do get a whisp of white/grey smoke at night when i look in the mirror i can see it in the headlights of the car behind. Think thats normal though?
