hi there,

about 6 weeks ago i bought a discovery 1 on a 94. 300tdi. its my first landrover and the bloke sold it to me by how clean the body work and engine is.

as i have had no experience with automotive stuff i bought it ! i paid £2100 had been for it with alot of axtras. e.g.... landy snorkle, diff guards, cb radio, 2" lift, extreme mud tyres, 9 tonne winch, winch bumper, so i thought it was ok price.

a friend of mine came to look at why the suspension was low after i had been out for a few hours and he has found quite a few bits that need doing, eg.. new springs, wheel bearings, couple of leaks, steering rod .. he has quoted me about £300 to sort these and supple all the bits included. As he has been doing this he has now found some more stuff that needs attention. probably looking at an extra £ 450 on top of the £300 but then it will be pretty sound.

anyone have any thoughts on this? weather it is worth spending the money on it. it has not body rust atm, has been looked after well. engine is brill and reliable and very dry. 177 000 miles but very clean and strong.

please let me know..
 
By the sounds of it you overpaid and will need to sell it to some wally with cash on the hip to get ya money back, that said, i would get it all sorted and run it for ten years. Honesty = Best policy.
 
well i do plan to keep it for a good few years and keep it well looked after so maybe i will get most of money back if it is still clean and well maintained ? even if i loose a £1500 in 5 years for instance the way i look at it is if someone offered me to hire a tool like this for 5 years at the price of £1500 i would jump at it ! so would i get £1500 quid for it in year 2017 if it still was rust free and a good clean strong discovery ??

well this is what im sort of trying to work out, will they start holding their money in a few years so for me to spend a few quid on it to make it right be a good idea or flog it and buy a kooshty one ?

Unfortunately you seem to have overpaid, the only way to get your money back is to wait until someone gives you what you paid for it, which in this climate is blue moon territory, got to sniff the bargains out, never, ever overpay.. Lesson ive learned quite a few times.
 
Look at the price of top quality 80s defenders nowadays, even without the offroad gubbins if they have been restored they cost a similar price to when they were new.
Older Land Rovers are a great example of a vehicle that loses value heavily a few years after it is bought but then gets it back in buckets after a certain time.
Part of this is due to their biggest problem: rust. Cure/prevent the rust and you have a future classic in your hands.
 
I agree with the above that you probably overpaid to begin with but £450 to set it all right seems like in the long run, knowing those jobs won't just crop up in a years time it probably works out ok.

The argument I had with myself about selling and buying a slightly newer one is that at least with mine I know every job that's been done and with any older car especially a land rover this is all that matters.

Sorry Denty, but you wouldn't get £1500 for it now, never mind in 5 years.

Have you checked the sills, inner front wings, rear crossmember and boot floor for rust? Those are the most common rust spots. The bodywork is made from aluminium so you won't find any rust on that.


I reckon it's current value is around about £600 - £800 pounds.

Good d1s sell for around 1500 now. And as they are the first of their kind will become sort after in years to come 20yo lr is at its lowest value so expect to see s steady climb in value as more and more are put to the crushers.

You have probably paid a bit over the odds but you generally don't buy a land rover to turn a profit. They will quite happily guzzle your cash in spare parts or diesel but you can't beat that feeling when you drive it

And yes to the rust questions. These are all sound.

As I said I'll try to get pics when it's back from menders if I can still afford an Internet connection. Lol.
