Yes its me, the stuck old record and his bulkhead :)

The progress so far, see pics...

OK, so most things are stripped from inside except the electrics and steering. Rust, is it worth patching what you can see in the picture or shall I go down the root of replacement?

If I repair, is it best done in situe or do I remove anyway before I start welding repair patches in?

As ive got it this far will it be cheaper in the long run to fit a new bulkhead!

Im at a lost with no real world friends who are into landys as much as I am, Im replying on you cyber companions to hlp a young dog decide how to treat his toy as its my first project like this.

Please please please, anyone who has done this before and wants to shed some knowledge and advice please do drop me a quick line, id very much appreciate your time.

p.s if anyone is in the Kings Lynn area and wants to visit or pass an eye over it there is a case of lager in it for you )
Kind regards,
Joe

If its Opinions your going by and not bulkhead swapping experience then yes, if it was me and I had it to the stage youve got it to I would replace mine, but thats just me, I like things to be right.

Your obviously wanting to do it, so go for it mate ;)

Thanks for the boost Scott, i do like things right but its hard to get the balance between "just use it and enjoy it" and "restore to former glory"
If money was no object id buy a new bulkhead on a heartbeat (think they are about £600 arent they? but currently it would take me 3 months to save for one ( unless people would take mine in as part exchange?!

Buster.....now that youve seen the pics what would you say old bean?

TBH mate, ah'd change it. only reason is that there's no tellin' how bad the rot is on the inside. mines didn't look to bad to start with until ah had a guid poke around it... luckily ah had bought a brand new td5 one a whiles back fur about £250 on ebay (needed some slight moddin' tae suit me 200tdi). Keep yer eye on ebay fur some decent second hand ones (or cheap new ones).. doesn't really matter if they're fur 200's, 300's td5's as they all fit where it's needed apart from maybe fillin' some holes or drillin' new ones and possibly cuttin' the tunnel tae suit.
that's just my opinion;):D

Bulkheads tend to rust from the inside out... if you intend to keep it and the chassis is solid it may be better to replace it but until you start digging you wont know just how bad it is. It may be cheaper to sell it on with 12 months MOT and put an extra 1K towards getting one with a solid bulkhead and chassis.
If you do a search on Bulkhead replacement, plenty of previous stuff on this. Unless the chassis is very good I cant see the point of putting a new bulkhead on.
What year is it? Remember you are unlikely to get any money back for all this work and costs do mount up quickly so make sure the figures add up.
I spent months and over £1500 getting my 90 right.... when I sold it a year later I got £400 more than I paid for it. But... it was fun :)

Thanks Buster and JC,
It is a 1995 300TDI with 108K on the clock, had a new transfer box and runs as sweet as a nut, ive just done a load of work getting the chassis good and there are no major problems here, just a few niggly bits but after waxoyling it I should be good for at elast 5years with the chassis.

Question is, do I leave the bulkhead as it is with some cosmetic repairs and replace bulkhead/chassis all in one go in 5years time or replace bulkhead on its own now?

Id better cdeclare it SORN either way and get some tax back as its gonna be off road for at least 2months while i get it sorted. I thought at first I could repair corners and thats that but now ive found surface rust in window vent surrounds it may be worse than I though inside where i cant see it!, I could patch pillars and theyd give me a couple years use, they are only bad in the bits you can se in pics - isolated rust but bad where it is....ARRRGGHHHH I DONT KNOW!!!

yep that is a good shot,
Although my outer skin seems ok, just the inner which has gone in the top corners and the pillars in one or two places. Thats not to say the inside skind of the fronts are going too but knocking them and they seem solid.
If someones top half has gone and they use this repair panel how do they go about the inside sking repair - do they just not put an inside skin back??!!

Mines was on the outside corners and vents, so chances are yours might be the same:eek:
Try and find a guid second hand one and fill with waxoyl (ah filled mine with zinc rich primer then paint);)

Hey Buster,
Great pic to show what might be inside!
At least the inner skin is intact in this pic - mine isnt!!! ****E!
I have to agree with you on the hinges, they were very corroded when i removed them with lots of the white aluminium powder almost stopping the bolts from being removed.

As mines is only seemingly gone on inside, if I repaired and filled with waxoyl what would I get for it if I sold instead of kept it do you think?

They were the photies from the outside, the other side was showin' signs of corrosion but never bothered me hole takin' photies!;)
TBH, ah've nae idea what ye'd get fur it if it was patched etc... but ah'd be tellin' the folk that was thinkin' of buyin' it what it was like and what ye've did tae it. Kinda the same thing if ye were thinkin' on buyin' a second hand one yersel';)

indeed, honesty pays as they say!
Thanks for the advice amigo.......i'll prob cut a piece out of inside skin and look insisde to assess damage. Will keep ye all posted!
