Hols in Woolacombe - strange noise from disco

Funny. Waiting for me mixed grill in The Quantock pub on edge of Bridgwater. Need food. Left hand is still juddering from the vibrations.
 
Grub was good. Even the kids ate everything. They must've been hungry.

Will be carrying on in a bit up the a38 towards brizzle.
 
Finally got home at about 5pm.

Massive thanks to LZIR bods who were on alert throughout.

Drover is going to be stripped tomorrow morning ready for a bit of a prod and poke around the transmission tunnel area as I suspect it may well be the hi/low linkage has gone slack - if such a thing be possible - as it was jumping out of hi and into neutral if no pressure was kept on the stick!!

My left hand has stopped vibrating now - the pity is I didn't be bothered to rough engineer something between the stick and under dash panel!

So in summary.... intermittent noise like a piece of tin being hit by something big n spinny with occasional thumps, then culminating in the problem showing itself with the hi/low jumping out of drive - suspect slack linkage, will report back for the greater good when all sorted.

I wish I'd spotted that you were having to hold the lever in place. I woulda hooked up with you on the way through and cable tied the linkage into place for you to save on the vibration white finger.:rolleyes::D
 
I now have an intimate feeling for the vagurees of me gearbox. Literally!!

Funny thing was - at the toll queue on the severn bridge I thought and even said to SWMBO, I could rig sommat up with an open ended spanner and a blob of tack to end me pain - but I didn't!!

I now know how Drover feels at all speeds in most gears/road conditions through the secret powers in me left hand!

I know!

Have to say - the old A39/38 is a lovely landy road. Chickened out of the 1 in 4 drop at Porlock Hill and ventured down the £2.50 1 in 14 toll road.

Lots of tree damage and a bit of a land slip on one bit.

The coast must have taken a heck of a battering.
 
SWMBO did in all fairness offer constantly to hold my stick.

I declined as I got to learn the rhythm of the box so to speak and could almost judge when it was going to need pressure or when I could ease off a little.

It was an interesting drive - my hand signals were pretty non existent, hill climbs/decents/roundabouts and junctions much more considered than normal!
 
Stripped the interior back so that I could access the tranny tunnel - guess what... couldn't replicate the fault on me test drive so I suspect that the foam rubber sound proofing was stopping the hi/low selector from engaging properly - I guess it was just catching enough to allow me to get drive.

Going to drive it with just the rubber gasket in place this week and then weather permitting next weekend I'll strip the selector linkage back - clean it and put it back together and give it a loving lube!

Did notice that one of the clevis pins had been replaced with a nut and bolt, so that will be sorted back to what it should be!!

Anyone know the part number for the foam rubber sound proofing as I can't for the life of me find a number.

No idea of part numbers but hopefully seems to be an easy fix :)
 
Gonna give it a good overhaul next weekend. Drop the tranny oil, new oil in then check and tighten up the selector linkage as its a little sloppy in places. Just a nip here and there, oh and a new clevis pin to replace a rather ratty looking nut and bolt that is distinctly non landy!!
