I don't know him, he just came on and posted that his turbo had failed.
Said that he bought the Land Rover with 200,000 km already on it.

defender td5 276000 on the clock second owner bought at 120000 guy said he had changed clutch at 80000 , since then had another clutch at 240000 two drive shafts and the usual wear and tare items brakes tyres light bulbs, maff sensor , injector harness , pump whines a bit on start up no and then , but still pulls like a train

My Defender 110 TD5 XS is at 257,045 today. I am just starting to think of a long term strategy for reliability. To change parts before they fail. For example from experience changing the clutch at 120,000 intervals would stop lack of drive issues on family holidays.

The clutch is unlikely to fail suddenly, when mine went it started by slipping a little at full power in higher gears. This continued for a few hundred miles before l booked it in for a clutch.
l avoided full power and it was still driving OK a week (and three hundred miles) later.

I was talking from experience. I had one moment with lack of gear selection leaving the ferry. 1600 miles later a Big Bang and no drive. Luckily I could walk home.

It's quite heart-warming to hear that so many TD5s can do so many miles fairly trouble free.

I've just had to swap my engine due to overheating whilst with previous owner. I can't say what lead to the fault in the first place.

I had the block skimmed by 8 thou (.2mm) to get it level again.

I replaced the clutch & flywheel while the engine was out so I'm not expecting to fiddle with it again for a number of years. I hope.

Discovery 2 1999

Core of engine rebuilt after a little misunderstanding with some deep water at 90k but everything else (pumps, turbo, injectors, transmission, suspension, steering etc) all original and working perfectly at 227k. However, disappointed as driver’s seat is wearing a bit....

have a 2001 defender it had done 250,000km when i bought it.
I have done 270,000 km on it the guy i bought it off did the clutch just before i got it had it 2 years and just got a cracked head never overheated or anything checked oil before i took it in for a service got it back from service drove it for about a week checked the oil and it had a lot of diesel in it oil level was about 5 inches above the high mark. The garage had used 15w 50 oil but don't think it would have caused the crack

So it has done 520K Km in total?? good going.

Cheers

2004 with 196,000 Miles here, owned since new. Engine, gearbox untouched. Usual brake callipers, shocks replaced, few electrical niggles, couple of starters, couple of fuel pumps, some wheel bearings. Usual oil seeps. Chassis pretty sound tho surface rust, aluminium body a bit battered (cows, trees, rocks) and a bit of sacrificial corrosion. Is usually covered in mud. It’s a farm Landy so it’s had a hard life but doubt a pick up would have taken the abuse. Remapped by Dynachip last year and now pulling harder than ever tho it needs its injector washers done just now. Am prepared to put a a galv chassis on it if it ever needs it and also do a full engine rebuild if necessary tho hope will do another 150,000 Miles before that. Have no intention of ever selling it as it was my dads.

I budget up to £500 /yr on repairs that with it holding its value is much better than £500/month on a new pickup!
